Salonga Law Center Holds “Tingog sa Kabataan: Pagtudlo sa Katungod sa mga Bata sa Pilipinas” at Ramon Magsaysay Elementary School

On March 6, 2026, the Salonga Law Center conducted a legal symposium entitled “Tingog sa Kabataan: Pagtudlo sa Katungod sa mga Bata sa Pilipinas” at Ramon Magsaysay Elementary School along W. Rovira Drive in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. The activity aimed to introduce elementary students to their rights and responsibilities under the Child and Youth Welfare Code and to raise awareness of the importance of protecting children’s welfare.

The program gathered students, teachers, and Salonga Law Center Senior High School volunteers for an afternoon of learning and engagement. The symposium began with the registration of participants, followed by an opening prayer and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. Isabella Therese B. Calis delivered the welcoming remarks and introduced the purpose of the activity, emphasizing the importance of educating young people about their rights and responsibilities.

The lecture proper focused on the provisions of the Child and Youth Welfare Code, particularly Article 3, which outlines the Rights of the Child, and Article 4, which discusses the Responsibilities of the Child. The topics were presented in segments by Salonga Law Center Senior High School volunteers Julia Marie G. Sarenas, Juliana Marie A. Bahinting, Lance T. Solon, and Isabella Therese B. Calis. Through these discussions, the students were guided in understanding how their rights protect their well-being and how their responsibilities help them contribute positively to their families, schools, and communities.

To further engage the students, the program included an interactive charades activity facilitated by the speakers and volunteers, followed by an open forum where participants were encouraged to ask questions and share their insights about the topics discussed.

During the program, Mikhail Lee Maxino, Director of the Salonga Law Center, also shared his thoughts on the importance of educating children about their legal rights. He highlighted that awareness of these rights empowers young people to protect themselves, respect others, and grow into responsible citizens who can contribute to society.

The activity concluded with closing remarks and a photo opportunity with the participants. The Salonga Law Center is honored to have conducted the symposium and to have engaged with the students of Ramon Magsaysay Elementary School. The event reflects the Center’s continued commitment to legal education, community outreach, and the promotion of children’s rights and welfare.

Salonga Law Center attends the Stakeholders’ Assembly: Friends of Gwave.

On February 24, 2026, at DCCO Hotel, Dumaguete City, the Gender Watch Against Violence and Exploitation (GWAVE) invited and gathered their valuable partners and friends who became part of and were instrumental in accomplishing their projects in the last year. The assembly consisted of members and representatives of different sectors, including VAW Desk officers from various LGUs within Negros Oriental, WCPD officers, members of the Board of Trustees, GWAVE members and officers, stakeholders, and partner organizations, which included Salonga Law Center. The GWAVE officers presented the organization’s accomplishments, ongoing projects, and the challenges they faced in their continued endeavor to advocate for women's and children’s rights.

The assembly also allowed participants to re-engage and reflect upon the recent gender-based incidents within the province during group discussions. The participants pondered and shared how certain spaces continue to perpetuate gender inequality through entrenched, misogynistic, and commodified practices, resulting in dire consequences for women. The participants also reflected upon the alcoholistic culture of Filipinos and its relation to these spaces and its role in the continued struggle to lift gender-based violence.

The Salonga Law Center, represented by its officers Rizzie Soliman and Adelle Ghenn Suan, is honored to have been part of the engaging and fruitful assembly filled with promise and communal unity. The experience served as a reminder of the Center's dedication to justice, equity, and the people’s welfare, and is proof of the effectiveness of cooperation in championing our advocacies.

Break the silence. Reclaim your rights! ✊🏻📣

"Let’s build a campus culture where accountability is unwavering, student rights are paramount, and every voice finds the support it deserves."

Take an active role in the Legal Assistance Program (LEAP) and discover how we can STRAWngthen our community together! This initiative by the SUSG STRAW Committee provides an in-depth process for the grievance system, ensuring that every concern is handled with "utmost sensitivity and confidentiality." Through our partnership with the Salonga Law Center, we offer legal awareness, support for grievance mechanisms, and escalating counsel for student concerns.

Learn how to utilize the STRAW Incident Report to document issues clearly—from identifying persons involved to stating your desired resolution. We are here to ensure that no student has to fear raising their voice. Whether through a referral, a walk-in at the Salonga office, or an online inquiry, help is within your reach.

Together, let’s ensure that Silliman University remains a place where everyone is welcome, respected, and protected.
