: Today is the 123rd Founders Day Anniversary of Silliman University!

Established on August 28, 1901 as Silliman Institute by Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, through Dr. David and Mrs. Laura Hibbard, Presbyterian missionaries and educators from the United States, Silliman University has witnessed over a century of God’s gifts through the lives of countless people it has touched.

This year’s Founders Celebration theme is, “Today’s Treasures, Tomorrow’s Traditions: Celebrating Silliman’s Gifts.”

So to all our alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends of the Silliman community, happy Founders Day, Sillimanians!

The Supreme Court has disbarred a lawyer for having multiple extramarital affairs.

The Court found him guilty of grossly immoral conduct, in violation of the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability (CPRA).

Under Canon VI, Section 33(f) of the CPRA, grossly immoral conduct, a serious offense, is an “act that is so corrupt or false as to constitute a criminal act.”

SC Imposes Imprisonment for Sale of Counterfeit Bills │

The Supreme Court has affirmed the penalty of imprisonment imposed on a person for illegal possession and use of false bank notes.

In a Decision penned by Associate Justice Jhosep Y. Lopez, the Supreme Court’s Second Division denied the petition for review on certiorari filed by Allan Gacasan (Gacasan) which challenged the rulings of the Court of Appeals (CA) and the Regional Trial Court (RTC) finding Gacasan guilty of violating Article 168 of the Revised Penal Code (RPC).

In a test-buy operation conducted in Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, the Criminal Investigation Detection Group (CIDG) arrested Gacasan after the latter offered to sell counterfeit bills to a confidential CIDG agent. Gacasan was caught in possession of 100 pieces of counterfeit 1000-peso bills and 25 pieces of counterfeit 500-peso bills. The said bills were confirmed to be counterfeit upon examination by Atty. Andrew E. Asperin (Atty. Asperin) of the Currency Issue and Integrity Office of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

The RTC convicted Gacasan for the crime of illegal possession and use of false treasury or bank notes under Article 168 of the RPC. The CA affirmed the conviction, prompting the present petition before the Court.

The rules, released years after the law was implemented, cover petitions and applications concerning detentions without judicial warrants of arrest, surveillance orders, freeze orders, restrictions on travel, designations, proscriptions, and other court issuances connected to the implementation of the anti-terror law.

'While the rules try to address errors, overreach, and abuses in the implementation continuously observed in dismissed terror cases we have handled, it cannot assure that these will not happen in the first place,' says human rights lawyer Kristina Conti
