Law student practitioners from the Cotabato State University College of Law visited the Pigcawayan District Jail on July 18, 2026, to conduct a comprehensive jail visitation, legal information drive, and relief outreach through the Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP). The day focused on combining legal rights education, one-on-one consultations, and humanitarian support for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs).

In a message of support, law student practitioner Lo Ivan Castillon shared the studentsโ€™ dedication to compassionate public service. "Justice is not just about what happens inside a courtroom," Castillon emphasized. "It's about upholding the dignity of persons deprived of liberty, keeping them informed of their legal rights, and making sure they know they are not forgotten by society."

The program opened with targeted lectures delivered by student practitioners. Saifah A. Benito discussed the Probation Law, while Nesrin L. Ayob explained the rules surrounding Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA).

During the open forum and legal consultations, PDLs asked pressing questions about their cases and detention status. The student practitioners provided direct legal clarifications on several key topics, including credit for preventive imprisonment, Special Time Allowance for Study, Teaching, and Mentoring (STAL), probation eligibility, recidivism, and the legal implications of frequent delinquency.

The outreach also delivered tangible relief to help meet the facility's daily needs. The team handed over 100 10-kilogram rice packs, essential goods, and medical supplies provided by Project TABANG under the Office of the Chief Minister, along with individual food packs prepared by the law student practitioners.

The assigned Pigcawayan Jail Officer Vicmar Grafilo welcomed the initiative and expressed deep gratitude for the support. The officer noted that the legal consultations gave detainees clear answers about their sentence calculations and release eligibility, which significantly eased administrative tensions and brought genuine hope to the facility.

Right after the visitation wrapped up, Dean Philip John L. Pojas convened a structured debriefing session with the student practitioners. Dean Pojas processed the day's experiences with the team, offering expert guidance on client interaction, legal ethics, and professional boundaries. This immediate debriefing allowed the students to unpack the heavy emotional and legal scenarios they encountered, turning raw fieldwork into structured, meaningful insight.

The visitation gave law student practitioners an invaluable learning experience outside the classroom. By calculating actual detention credits, explaining complex penal concepts in plain language, and listening to client histories, the students sharpened their interviewing skills, deepened their understanding of criminal procedure, and gained a firsthand look at the human side of the justice system.

Students from the CSU College of Law gained valuable courtroom experience during a court observation at Regional Trial Court Branch 13, presided over by Hon. Judge Yshnaira Ibrahim.

The court observation allowed student practitioners to witness actual proceedings and get a clearer picture of courtroom procedures, judicial ethics, and the everyday administration of justice.

These proceedings offered firsthand insight into criminal litigation, due process, and the court's core responsibility to deliver fair and impartial justice. By connecting classroom discussions with real-world practice, the visit reinforced the value of experiential learning under the CLEP curriculum.

This hands-on exposure brings clear benefits to both the students and the broader community. For student practitioners, watching active trials sharpens their analytical skills and prepares them to become practice-ready lawyers. For indigent and marginalized litigants who rely on free legal assistance, having law students trained through actual court experience guarantees they receive informed, capable, and ethically grounded legal support.

COTABATO CITY โ€” The Cotabato State University College of Law Legal Aid Office took its services to the community on July 11, 2026, holding a free legal consultation for the residents of Barangay Rosary Heights 5.

The outreach is a core part of the Community Empowerment Program under the Office of Deputy Speaker MP Romeo K. Sema, DPA, with CSU serving as an active partner.

CSU Law Dean Philip John Pojas highlighted the initiative's institutional impact. He noted that these consultations serve as the backbone of the law schoolโ€™s community extension program, pushing students to understand the real-world impact of their education and fostering a deep commitment to social justice.

Atty. Mohammad Hadji Yusoph shared a separate message highlighting the students' practical growth and the strength of the CLEP program. He explained that these field consultations give students an invaluable reality check outside the university library. By learning to handle real cases and interact with actual clients, the students develop the essential communication and analytical skills that will define their future careers in public service.

_________

The legal aid office operates under the university's Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP). As a mandatory, credit-earning course for law students, CLEP bridges the gap between legal theory and actual practice. Marginalized and indigent residents gain access to free legal services they might otherwise be unable to afford, while law student practitioners gain the hands-on experience they need to become practice-ready, ethical lawyers.

Advocacy knows no walls. In compliance with the mandates of the Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP), our Cotabato State University (CotSU) Law Student Practitioners (LSPs) recently visited the Cotabato City Female Dormitory to provide legal orientation and essential humanitarian support to 32 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs).

The mission focused on empowering the PDLs through education, focusing on critical legal avenues for temporary liberty, rehabilitation, and early release. During the session, our LSPs comprehensively discussed the concepts and processes surrounding Bail, the Probation Law, and the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) system.

Understanding that true justice involves both legal guidance and holistic care, the CotSU College of Law mobilized a powerful network of government partners to deliver vital resources to the dormitory such as Seedlings from City Agriculturist Office, 25kg Rice and Food Packs from the Bangsamoro READi, and Common Medicine, Supplements, and Vitamins from the Project TABANG of the Office of the Chief Minister.

Our College of Law Dean and Supervising Lawyer, Atty. Philip John Pojas, led the legal team on the ground. In his address to the residents, Dean Pojas delivered a powerful message of restoration, emphasizing that legal struggles do not diminish human worth.

"Your dignity as human beings is never stripped away by incarceration," Dean Pojas reminded the PDLs. "The ultimate goal of the justice system is rehabilitation, ensuring that you can be successfully reintegrated and welcomed back as productive members of the communityโ€.

The Jail Senior Inspector Cherry C. Durante (Jail Warden) expressed profound gratitude to CotSU and its partners, noting that the female dormitory is seldom visited by outside organizations. The Warden thanked the team for the timely legal and material assistance and used the opportunity to reinforce a message of hope to the residents, reminding them that they are valued, respected, and definitely not neglected by society.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the City Agriculturist, Bangsamoro READi, Project TABANG, and the BJMP management for making this impactful community outreach possible. To our CotSU Law Student Practitioners, thank you for bringing both the light of the law and human compassion to those who need it most.

Compassionate justice in action, future lawyers! โš–๏ธ

Cotabato State University (CotSU) College of Law reached a major milestone on July 10, 2026, with the formal launching and ribbon-cutting of its new Legal Aid Office. The event marks a massive step forward for the university's Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP).

The opening of this dedicated office is a win-win for both the community and the university. For marginalized and indigent residents who cannot afford private counsel, the office is a gateway to free, accessible legal services. For law student practitioners, it is a hands-on training ground where they can develop practical skills, build confidence, and learn the ethics of public service before graduation.

The Guest of Honor, Judge Angelito Vencer Rasalan of the Municipal Circuit Trial Court of Maguindanao, offered some blunt and refreshing wisdom to the law students in attendance. Drawing from his own journey, he told the students that getting embarrassed in class is completely normal and just part of the process. He advised them to leave their egos and titles at the door when they enter the classroom, emphasizing that their only focus should be to learn and practice the law.

Dean Philip John L. Pojas closed the ceremony with a powerful message. He highlighted that the Legal Aid Office is the heart of the law schoolโ€™s community extension program. Dean Pojas reminded the newly recognized certified law student practitioners that their education is a tool for social justice, challenging them to use their skills to protect and defend the rights of those who need it most.

The program kicked off at the CotSU Gymnasium, where Atty. Mohammad M. Hadji Yusoph welcomed the guests, followed by a detailed backgrounder on the Legal Aid Office and CLEP by Public Attorney's Office District Head Atty. Yusoph P. Binsuan. University President Prof. Sema G. Dilna, Ed.D., threw his full institutional backing behind the initiative, calling the new office a milestone for the entire university. In his message, he highlighted that the Legal Aid Office perfectly aligns with CotSUโ€™s core mission to lead in community development and public service.

After recognizing the certified law student practitioners, the attendees walked over to the new office for a traditional Du'a, the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a quick tour of the facility. With the office now fully operational, the CotSU College of Law is ready to make a significant impact on access to justice in Cotabato City.

COTABATO CITY โ€” Law student practitioners from the Cotabato State University College of Law recently stepped out of the classroom to observe actual courtroom dynamics as part of their Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP).

The law student practitioners first visited RTC Branch 13 in Cotabato City, presided over by Judge Ysnaira A. Ibrahim. During this session, students witnessed 20 cases presented and arraigned. The experience gave them a front-row seat to see how prosecutors and Public Attorneyโ€™s Office (PAO) lawyers present and raise their motions during active proceedings. After the session adjourned, Judge Ibrahim granted the students a valuable opportunity to ask questions and clarify their observations regarding the cases presented.

The students also observed a complex bail proceeding at RTC Branch 14 in Cotabato City, presided over by Presiding Judge Bai Ashrafia Aymee A. Biruar-Mitmug. This session offered key insights into the mechanics of bail hearings, specifically focusing on the strategic presentation of witnesses and the intense nature of cross-examination. A major highlight for the students was watching the professional legal banter between a private defense lawyer and the prosecutor in the courtroom, which showed them how to argue aggressively while maintaining absolute professional decorum.

This experiential learning opportunity allowed the law student practitioners to witness the rules of court come to life in high-stakes environments. By observing the distinct roles of judges, prosecutors, public defenders, and private counsel, the students gained a deeper understanding of trial strategy and courtroom ethics, bringing them one step closer to being practice-ready lawyers upon graduation.

Kaya narito ang "LEGAL BA 'TO? LEX-PLAIN!" Isang programa ng mga estudyante ng Cotabato State University College of Law, dala sa inyo ng DXDM 99.5 Layag News FM Cotabato. Our Cotabato State University (CotSU) Law Student Practitioners (LSPs) recently stepped out of the classrooms and into the coastlines for a vital environmental initiative! Showing that legal advocacy extends far beyond the four walls of a courtroom, our LSPs partnered with the Office of the City Agriculturist for a meaningful Mangrove Tree Planting activity in Purok Timako, Brgy. Kalanganan, Cotabato City, on July 4th, 2026.

The green initiative highlights the holistic training of CotSUโ€™s future lawyers, emphasizing civic duty, community service, and environmental stewardship.

Our College of Law Dean and Supervising Lawyer, Atty. Philip John Pojas, accompanied the student practitioners on the ground. Dean Pojas took the opportunity to ground the activity in legal philosophy, powerfully emphasizing the landmark Supreme Court doctrine of Oposa vs. Factoran.

He reminded the LSPs of the profound concept of intergenerational responsibilityโ€”the legal and moral duty of the present generation to protect and preserve our natural resources so that future generations may also enjoy a balanced and healthy ecology.

The Acting City Agriculturist, Myra Aisah A. Pendaliday, through her representative, warmly welcomed the partnership and commended the universityโ€™s initiative. During the event, she highlighted its long-term vision to expand mangrove planting across strategic areas. The Acting City Agriculturist also highlighted the contribution of the Bantay-Dagat in maintaining and ensuring that the mangroves will survive and flourish.

In her speech, she emphasized that as a coastal city, mangroves are essential for Cotabato City. These coastal forests serve as a critical first line of defense against storm surges, help mitigate flooding, prevent shoreline erosion, and provide a thriving habitat for marine life that local fishing communities depend on.

We are incredibly proud of our CotSU Law Student Practitioners for embodying the spirit of progressive public service. By planting roots today, you are actively protecting the communities you will soon serve as full-fledged lawyers.

Kudos to the CotSU College of Law and the City Government of Cotabato City for this impactful, forward-looking partnership!

Green justice in action, future lawyers!
