Ontario Opens Doors to Skilled Workers in Rural and Northern Communities with New REDI Pilot Program

The Ontario government is launching the Regional Economic Development through Immigration (REDI) pilot program to attract highly-skilled workers to four regions experiencing significant labour shortages: Lanark, Leeds and Grenville, Sarnia-Lambton, and Thunder Bay. This initiative aims to boost economic growth by filling in-demand roles in sectors such as healthcare, technology, and skilled trades (including construction). Through the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP), REDI will provide an additional 200 nominations per region, totaling 800 opportunities for internationally trained workers. If you have a job offer from an employer in one of these communities, and your skills are in high demand, you're encouraged to explore this streamlined pathway to permanent residency.

Ottawa has announced vital updates to the International Student Program that enhance flexibility and protection for international scholars: - An increase in allowable off-campus work hours to 24 hours/week during academic terms (and full-time during breaks), allowing students to earn while they learn and a requirement for a new study permit when transferring between institutions safeguards against misuse of the system while ensuring oversight. The Canadian government, through Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), is proposing a new immigration pathway for essential and low-skilled workers with Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities (TEER) levels 4 and 5. This new pathway, expected to be implemented by Fall 2024, is part of the Forward Regulatory Plan 2024-26.
Key Features of the New Pathway:

• Permanent Economic Immigration Class: This pathway will create a dedicated economic immigration class for TEER 4 and 5 workers, addressing the challenges they currently face in obtaining permanent residency.
• Essential and Low-Skilled Occupations: This pathway will focus on occupations crucial to the Canadian economy, mainly in healthcare, hospitality, and manufacturing.
• Canadian Work Experience: Applicants must have at least 12 months of full-time Canadian work experience in a TEER 4 or 5 occupation, similar to the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
• Streamlined Approach: The pathway aims to have a faster implementation process to meet the demands of the labor market.

Here's a glimpse of some projects receiving support:
Smart Sustainable Resilient Infrastructure Association: This organization is receiving over $3 million to enable 20+ Alberta businesses to participate in its Green Building Technology Network.

ELIXR Simulations: With over $1.3 million in funding, ELIXR Simulations will deliver training and business development tools to boost the production and adoption of extended reality technologies.

University of Alberta: The University of Alberta is receiving over $1.3 million to establish the Canadian Cluster for Laser and Advanced Manufacturing. This research hub will facilitate expansion into new industries and international markets for Alberta laser cladding manufacturers.

Northwestern Polytechnic: Over $390,000 is being allocated to Northwestern Polytechnic to develop and provide sugar and botanical testing services at the National Bee Diagnostic Centre in Beaverlodge.
