Wewak, East Sepik Provinceโ€” Brenda Balagawi, a graduate of the Master of Science in Environmental Science program, has established herself as a woman entrepreneur in Papua New Guinea, founding EcoBiota Enviromental Services. Residing in Wewak, her journey highlights her entrepreneurial drive in establishing a consultancy focused on environmental education and addressing local environmental impacts, with future plans to create employment opportunities within her home province.

Ms. Balagawi attended Bugandi High School/Secondary and the University of Papua New Guinea. Born in East Sepik Province and raised in Lae, Morobe Province, she pursued her postgraduate studies in the Philippines from 2014 to 2017 at the University of San Carlos in Cebu City. Ms. Balagawi was a self-sponsored student, with her parents and herself covering the fees for her studies.

Studying abroad contributed significantly to Ms. Balagawi's personal growth and development, particularly in fostering an entrepreneurial mindset. "Coming to the Philippines to study had given me a wider and broader perspective on things like education, business, and innovation," she noted. "I became a different person after I graduated because I have discovered that there is so much I can do with the knowledge and skills I have now. (for example, A Coconut Tree is a tree but I can do so many things with that one plant.)." She attributes her increased confidence and self-reliance to her time away from home and family, which now significantly aids her career as an entrepreneur.

Upon returning to PNG, Ms. Balagawi faced a primary obstacle: employment opportunities. "Finding jobs in Papua New Guinea is very challenging," she recounted. To overcome this, she initially worked as a volunteer with a church organization in 2018 then was given a Communication and Media Director position in 2021 which she served till 2023 where she left and started her entrepreneur journey. This experience, coupled with her entrepreneurial drive, led to the pivotal decision to establish her own business. Her approach to overcoming this challenge is to "keep trying and also start up something you can do whilst job hunting." This initiative directly led to the establishment of her small and medium-sized enterprise (SME).

Currently, Ms. Balagawi runs her own environmental business, EcoBiota Enviromental Services, where she works as a consultant. Her postgraduate studies in the Philippines, which involved extensive research work and presentations, equipped her with crucial research and consultation skills for her current role. The most rewarding part of her work is its focus on environmental education and its direct impact on communities. "My business is focused on environmental education, and it is satisfying when I help clients learn to solve issues they face from environmental impacts around them," she shared.

Beyond her business, Ms. Balagawi is deeply involved in community development and social projects, embodying her commitment to women's empowerment and environmental stewardship. She participates in Church programs with youth, children, and women, actively engaging in "women in leadership programs" Her advice to other PNG students who want to make a difference is to "Use your skills, talents, or what you are passionate about to help those in the communities close to you." Starting a business should not only focus on money, you must be purpose driven to help provide options to solve a problem and that's where people will support your dream." When we share, we continue to expand our knowledge and skills."

Looking ahead five years, Ms. Balagawi envisions her business to become an educational organization. Her dream is to "help open up employment opportunities to those interested in working in the business," directly contributing to job creation in PNG. Graduating as a postgrad confirmed her as a professional with specific skills and knowledge in her field, providing a sense of accomplishment and pride that fuels her entrepreneurial drive.

For students considering further education through an agency, Ms. Balagawi offers a personal message: "Take the risk and explore while you still have the chance. Life evolves and we age over time. When you have the opportunity to study abroad, take it and go. You may never know what is waiting for you out there.โ€

Brenda Balagawi's journey from a postgraduate student to a self-employed environmental consultant exemplifies how international education and personal initiative can lead to impactful contributions, job creation, and women's empowerment in Papua New Guinea.

100-year-old Mr. Paul Paguk shared a proud moment with his 27-year-old grandson Philip Paguk, who is currently employed as an aircraft maintenance engineer at the national airline carrier, Air Niugini. The two posed for a momentous picture at the airport tarmac during Mr. Paulโ€™s arrival flight at the domestic terminal in Port Moresby.

โ€œI wasnโ€™t sure if heโ€™d still be around to witness even a small part of my journey. But today, he stood beside me on the tarmac โ€” a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life.โ€ Philip shared.

Mr. Paul Paguk, a devoted teacher and early mentor to Philip, hails from Sabakamanda Village, Wapenamanda district, in Enga Province and had an important effect on Philipโ€™s journey. He taught his grandson how to read and write before Philip enrolled in elementary school.

Philip Paguk attended high school at Kopen Secondary School in Enga Province and moved to the Philippines at the young age of fourteen with the help of Paradise International Education Consultancy (PIEC). In 2013 Philip continued high school at the Benedicto High School in Cebu City, Philippines, and continued to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Aircraft Maintenance Technology (BS AMT) at the Indiana Aerospace University in 2019.

โ€œI was honored to be the first and youngest student under PIECโ€™s guidance to attend Benedicto High School in the Philippines, and graduating in 2019 remains one of the most significant achievements of my life,โ€ said Philip.

When asked about how studying abroad contributed to his personal growth and development, Philip said, โ€œStudying overseas in the Philippines was instrumental to my personal growth. It developed my independence as I managed academic and daily responsibilities far from home. Immersion in a multicultural environment enhanced my adaptability and communication skills, particularly in English. Overcoming challenges such as cultural adjustment and homesickness strengthened my resilience and problem-solving abilities. These experiences have prepared me to work effectively in diverse and demanding professional settings.โ€

Upon returning to PNG, Philip shared that the transition wasnโ€™t easy in the beginning. โ€œ I had to get used to the local work style and figure out how to put what I learned abroad into practice. I maintained my focus, continued to learn, and sought support from my coworkers and mentors. Over time, everything fell into place, and now I'm proud of the progress I've made," said Philip.

โ€œThe greatest lesson my grandfather taught me was the importance of self-discipline and punctuality. Those are values that continue to guide me in my career as an aircraft maintenance engineer,โ€ Philip reflected.

Paradise International Education Consultancy (PIEC) continues to assist aspiring students like Philip and supports parents, such as Mr. Paul Paguk, in enrolling their children in universities in the Philippines today. Interested students and parents can WhatsApp PIEC at +63 917 167 1089.

Kudjip, Jiwaka Provinceโ€”33-year-old Jehoshaphat Kalwe, originally from East Sepik and Jimi Tabibuga village in Jiwaka, has returned from studies abroad to settle and serve as a medical laboratory technician with his Filipina wife. The couple recently welcomed their second child, Jehozekel Satera Kalwe, who was born in Jiwaka Province at the same hospital his father works for.

For Mr. Kalwe, Jiwaka represents his home. "Jiwaka is home for me. Bringing my family home and sharing my childhood memories with my son and wife was always an intriguing topic for my elder son. Jiwaka people are peaceful, and Waghi Valley is fertile with surplus natural crops and vegetables. I find it peaceful living here and raising my in*******al family. Walking around town, we always garner attention and admiration. Home is where the heart is," Mr. Kalwe stated.

Jehoshaphat Kalwe was born in East Sepik and raised in Jiwaka Province. His parents, George Kalwe and Sylvia Kalwe, both served as healthcare workers at Kudjip Nazarene General Hospital for over 30 years; his mother as a midwife and his father as a nursing officer. Their professional background influenced Mr. Kalwe's decision to pursue a Bachelor of Science major in biological sciences at Southwestern University Phinma in the Philippines.

In 2014, Mr. Kalwe moved to the Philippines under the guidance of Paradise International Education Consultancy (PIEC) to pursue his education abroad. This journey, undertaken despite the financial realities of his parents' work, also led to a significant personal connection. "My parents work at a mission hospital where their salary isnโ€™t a lot," Mr. Kalwe stated, addressing the financial aspects of his overseas study. "But with God's help and plans for my life, doors opened, and he provided me with financial support for the past 6 years of studying through my motherโ€™s financial support." It was during his studies that he met Leah. Mr. Kalwe recalled, "While studying, I met my wife, and our relationship grew stronger. We were perfectly made for each other."

When asked if their connection was "love at first sight," Leah laughingly responded, "No, it was not love at first sight." However, their relationship blossomed during his time in the Philippines, and she explained her growing certainty about Jehoshaphat: "I knew he was the one when he started to care about me." Jehoshaphat, now a father of two mixed Filipino boys, cherishes the time spent there, stating, "Bringing her home after graduation and getting married is a bonus. The Philippines is still my second home, and I'm proud of it."

Upon moving to Papua New Guinea with Jehoshaphat, Leah Satera described her adjustment to a new culture. Her initial challenge was adapting to the local cuisine. "When I first arrived in PNG, I couldn't eat PNG foods like kumu, but slowly, I overcame it and can eat it now," she stated. While acknowledging cultural differences, Leah observed that PNG has "a lot more customs compared to the Philippines" and is more cultured; however, the religious diversity is similar to that in the Philippines. She found she could fit in well and learn her husband's traditions and adapt to the lifestyle. Despite occasionally missing Filipino food, Leah expressed appreciation for her new family. "I love my husbandโ€™s family; they're very supportive in everything I do. In both times of illness and celebration, they have consistently shown me great respect and ensured my comfort." Of her husband, she remarked, "He is a caring and responsible man in everything he does. He always puts God and family first. He is husband material."

After graduation and their marriage, the couple returned to Papua New Guinea with their elder son, Jehozadak Satera Kalwe (born in San Carlos City, Philippines). The professional transition upon their return was not without its challenges. The transition involved obtaining professional licenses. "Getting my medical licenses to practice in PNG was a challenge. I went through many processes and screenings," Mr. Kalwe recounted. Following a year of residency at Port Moresby General Hospital, he received his license. A three-month period of unemployment followed. "Having a foreign wife and a son who was raised in the Philippines and trying to adapt to our lifestyle, cuisine, and culture was initially difficult."

During this period, the family engaged in various activities to support themselves. "I didn't have money to support or feed my family, so we borrowed my sister's fridge to sell ice cream and my mother's oven to bake pizza to sell so we could afford essentials. We did this for 2 months." Leah, described by Mr. Kalwe as "a humble wife sent from above," gradually adapted to the PNG lifestyle, including gardening and pig care.

Mr. Kalwe subsequently secured a position as a medical laboratory technician at Kudjip Nazarene General Hospital. "Thank you to Kudjip Nazarene Hospital for employing me without experience. I'm fully committed to serving the mission." The hospital later provided the family with a newly constructed house. "God's perfect timing brought everything together, and we successfully settled into our new home." Looking back in my life, I wouldn't have come this far. I'm nothing, but with God in my life, I have everything."

Studying abroad significantly impacted Mr. Kalwe's personal and professional development. He noted, "It allowed me to become more independent and self-reliant. The experience fostered more confidence in my abilities." Mr. Kalwe stated, "I developed valuable communication skills and a respectful work attitude. These are integral to my professional work." He also acquired discipline and practical skills in handling samples, equipment, and laboratory procedures, which boosted his confidence. Beyond his work, Mr. Kalwe contributes to his community through involvement in the music ministry at Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene.

In his role as a medical laboratory technician, Mr. Kalwe finds satisfaction in his work. "I always feel satisfaction after running a routine laboratory task for a patient and passing out confidential diagnosis results to doctors." His future plans involve continued professional development: "I plan to continue to develop my skills and expertise in my field. I believe I am uniquely positioned to excel in my career and positively impact the lives of patients in the hospital through laboratory diagnoses.''

According to a study on nurse migration published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine's PubMed Central, Filipino healthcare professionals, especially nurses, are globally recognized for their compassionate patient care, strong work ethic, and adaptability. Their rigorous education, often accompanied by English proficiency, equips them with excellent clinical skills that meet international standards, making them highly sought after in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the Middle East.

Struggling to balance classes, studying, and a social life? ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽ‰ A smart schedule can help you stay on top of it allโ€”without missing out! Hereโ€™s how:

๐Ÿ“… Block Your Study Time First
Treat lectures and study sessions like important appointments. Use a planner or app to lock in focused work hoursโ€”this keeps last-minute cramming at bay.

โ˜• Schedule Social Time Too
Yes, plan your fun! Whether itโ€™s club meetups, gym sessions, or coffee breaks with friends, putting it in your calendar ensures you actually enjoy downtime guilt-free.

โš–๏ธ Prioritize What Matters
You donโ€™t have to say yes to everything. Choose events and commitments that energize you, and donโ€™t forget to leave room for rest.

๐Ÿ”„ Stay Consistent (But Keep It Flexible)
A routine helps, but life happens. Adjust when neededโ€”balance is about progress, not perfection!

A little planning = less stress + more time for what you love. ๐Ÿ’ก Try it this week and see the difference! ๐Ÿ“Œ
