I BIT MORE THAN I COULD CHEW
Last April 2020, I informed Atty. Kim Grace Mendoza, the managing partner of the then Mendoza Lee Isles Mendoza Law Offices, that I would be resigning from the firm to separate my practice (again, as I always had a separate practice).
In August 2020, I transferred to my new location at 102 J. Alcantara St., Sambag 1, Cebu City. In July 2022, I merged my practices with certain other lawyers to form the V. Isles & Co. Law Firm.
The transition from solo practice to managing a seven-lawyer firm had not been easy. New work procedures had to be created, people had to be managed, and, for the first time, I had to be directly responsible in making sure that employees are paid.
My personal support to my girlfriend's candidacy in the recently concluded Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (BSKE) 2023 hurt my personal finances deeply. The books of the firm had also been hurt. I have to re-assess my financial situation.
In view of this, I have decided to dissolve the firm, and accept the offer of the FMZ LPG Center, Inc. to be its Legal Director (with additional tasks related to employee handling). The sizable offer of the corporation will help me recover a good portion of my losses. It would also allow me to finally focus some of my time in finishing the manuscript of a book I had been working on for some time now. But it will not allow me to practicd privately.
What this means for our clients: with the dissolution of the firm, we will be assisting you in transitioning to other lawyers or law firms. Four of the seven lawyers will continue with private practice at the same address, while waiting to find new offices. Those who had been used to being assisted by a certain lawyer may want to engage that lawyer for their concerns, at their mutually acceptable terms. Unfortunately, we have to let go most of the pro bono clients.
It is with a heavy heart that I announce this. Just a few months shy of my tenth anniversary in private practice, I have to return to private employment. Anybody who had been in private practice understands the freedom that comes with it. Nevertheless, there are certain sacrifices that have to be made, in consequence of our past actions.
