The Supreme Court of the Philippines ruled that the government can legally support renewable energy projects like solar and wind power, even if consumers help pay for it through a small charge in their electricity bills.

In this case, several groups questioned the legality of the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) System under the Renewable Energy Act of 2008, saying it was unfair to consumers. However, the Court said the program is valid because it helps the country develop cleaner and safer sources of energy, reduce pollution, and lessen dependence on oil and coal.

The Supreme Court explained that the government has the power to create rules that protect the environment and improve the country’s energy future.

The Supreme Court in 𝑺𝒐𝒕𝒐 𝒗. 𝑹𝒆𝒚𝒆𝒔-𝑺𝒐𝒕𝒐 ruled that a marriage can still be declared void because of psychological incapacity even without a psychologist or psychiatrist testifying in court.

The Court said judges can look at the actions, behavior, and testimonies of the people involved to decide if a spouse is truly unable to fulfill the responsibilities of marriage.

In this case, the husband was able to prove that his wife could not properly perform her duties as a spouse, so the Supreme Court upheld the decision declaring their marriage void.

In 𝘼𝙣𝙙𝙧𝙤 𝘽𝙖𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙞, 𝙚𝙩.𝙖𝙡 𝙫𝙨 𝙁𝙞𝙗𝙚𝙧 𝙏𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙪𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙤𝙧𝙥., the Supreme Court reminded employers that flexible work arrangements cannot be imposed unilaterally.

While companies may reduce workdays during economic difficulties, they must first secure the voluntary agreement of employees, notify the DOLE, and prove actual or imminent business losses.

In this case, the employer merely informed workers of the reduced schedule without obtaining genuine consent and failed to justify the measure with sufficient proof of financial distress.

As a result, the Court ruled that the unlawful reduction of workdays and salaries amounted to constructive dismissal.
