CAREER WEEK DAY 2 (AM): Meeting a Lawyer ⚖️

This morning, Atty. Janice Domogan-Dy, one of our Bright Hope parents, shared what lawyers do. The students learned to listen, ask questions, and find a fair fix when there is a problem.

Some of them even got to be judge for a day! They took their role very seriously and it was the cutest thing to watch.

𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐍𝐨. 𝟔𝟔𝟑𝟒 was filed to strengthen the 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐭 (𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐜𝐭 𝐍𝐨. 𝟕𝟓𝟖𝟏) by including 𝐠𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞, 𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐥, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐮𝐦 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬 as 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, recognizing their direct impact on 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬, 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬.

As noted in the bill’s explanatory note, the proposal was informed by observed fuel price disparities, including cases where areas such as 𝐁𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐨 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 experience consistently higher fuel prices despite comparable supply conditions—highlighting the need for 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 and 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐬.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 by affirming that profits must be 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞, taking into account 𝐚𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬, 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬, and other justifiable operational expenses.

Any government action under the Price Act remains 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥, 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞-𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝, particularly for 𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬, and may only be exercised 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐰.

The measure reinforces 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 while remaining consistent with existing market mechanisms and the 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐰.
