“Don’t make a habit of always carrying them, or you’ll struggle later on.”

But my life has never really been easy anyway...so if I’m going to carry something, let it be the choice to hold you a little longer whenever you need me.
The world is already overwhelming for adults, and even more so for babies who don’t yet understand it. If my arms can be your comfort, your safety, your home for now, then that’s a struggle I’m willing to embrace. One day you’ll grow, you’ll walk on your own, and you won’t need to be carried anymore but until then, I’ll hold you close for as long as you ask or want me to.

Living alone, thousands of miles away from my family taught me how to stand on my own. I learned to be brave quietly. I learned to hold my longing and still show up for life. Some nights I cried for home and some mornings I surprised myself by surviving.

Then I became a mum.

Now when my child looks for comfort, she looks for me. When the world feels too big, my arms are the place she turns to. I sing songs that carry my accent. I pass on warmth that traveled oceans to get here.

I still miss my family back home more than I can say. But I understand something new now.

I moved far from home.
And somehow, I became it.
