In March 1869 CH Borlase arrived from Wellington to practice in Whanganui, before joining WH Barnicoat to form Borlase & Barnicoat. Meanwhile, W J Treadwell set up practice in 1892, and shortly after joined T Lloyd to form Treadwell & Lloyd. GS Gordon practised with C Burnett from 1904 to 1907.

1907 saw the firms come together and be known as Barnicoat Treadwell & Gordon. W

ith Barnicoat passing away in 1909, the firm simply became Treadwell & Gordon. Three generations of Treadwells practised with the firm over 80 years. W J Treadwell was borough solicitor. His son C Treadwell joined in 1919 and practised until 1974, as City solicitor. His son J Treadwell joined in 1959, and carried on the family business until 1972. GS Gordon's career could be rightly described as the "Father of the Legal Profession in Whanganui". GS Gordon’s grandson Gordon Swan joined us in 1951 and is still here. His daughter Jeannie Warnock was appointed to the partnership in 1983, and now practises for a prominent Wellington firm. Three partners of Treadwell Gordon have been appointed as Judges. Bryan Haggitt was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court in 1959, John Treadwell, a District Court Judge in 1972, and Michael Lance as a District Court Judge in 1988. In 1989 the firm widened its provincial links to merge with Coleman & Co, a long established Waverley firm. Jim Coleman has been practising in Whanganui with the firm since 2007. Since 2010 we’ve been growing in the region, merging with Flack Brown in 2014 and extending our offices to Taihape and Ohakune as well.

Meet Chloe, Junior Trust Account Administrator. Her work supports the accurate management of client funds and the smooth running of our trust processes.

Chloe joined Treadwell Gordon in 2024 as an Office Junior and has since grown into a role that suits her perfectly. Trust account administration requires precision, care and consistency, qualities Chloe brings to her work every day.

Outside the office, you will find her reading, exploring new music or making the most of festival season.

We are glad to have you on the team, Chloe.

You solve most problems yourself. That's the nature of farming, and it serves you well more often than not.

But some decisions carry real weight, and those are the ones worth getting right.

That's where having a legal team who knows the region, understands rural business, and can give you straight answers makes a difference.

After 26 years serving the Taihape community, first with Flack Brown & Co and then 13 years with Treadwell Gordon, Kim has officially hung up her boots.

Kim has been a fearless advocate for her clients and the very definition of a trusted family practitioner, always putting the people she worked with first. She has been the heart of our Taihape office, and she will be greatly missed.

Last month we gathered at Kings in Ohakune to celebrate her and give her the send-off she deserved. We wish Kim all the very best in her retirement.

In many farming families, children contribute years of labour or investment with an expectation of future involvement that is never formally discussed. When circumstances change, those unspoken assumptions can become the source of real tension.

Our latest article looks at this and a number of other situations where small issues in rural businesses can grow into something much more significant.

Read the full blog here:

Rural businesses rely on trust, long standing relationships, and a willingness to help each other out. Most of the time, this approach works well. But even in the most well-run operations, small issues can grow into something much bigger when they are left unaddressed. A simple misunderstanding, a d...

Treadwell Gordon has been part of this region for generations. With offices in Whanganui, Feilding, Marton, Taihape, Ohakune and Waverley, we are not a firm that serves this community from a distance.

The people who come to us are our neighbours, our community members, the families and businesses we see at local events and pass on the street.

That closeness matters to us. It shapes how we work and how seriously we take the trust people place in us when they walk through our door.

Handshake arrangements are built on trust, and in rural communities that trust is usually well-placed.

The problem is not the people involved. It is that circumstances change in ways nobody planned for, and when they do, a good faith agreement offers very little to stand on.

For most farming families, it involves working through some of the most significant decisions the business will ever face.

Our team has guided many families through that process.

We understand that the legal side sits alongside the personal side, and that getting the structure right means taking the time to understand what the family is actually working towards. It's work that we value, just as much as the families we work alongside.

For farming families, succession is one of the most significant decisions a business will ever face. It is also one of the most commonly deferred.

The earlier the conversations start, the more room there is to work through the practical and emotional layers carefully, without the pressure of urgency driving the decisions.

Read the full blog here:

For many farming families, the land is more than an asset - it’s identity, history, and livelihood wrapped into one. That’s why succession can feel so daunting. It’s emotional, complex, and often easier to push aside for another season. But the truth is simple: the earlier you start, the smoot...
