For *Alex, leaving family violence meant facing an impossible question: what would happen to *Charlie?

“He’s part of our family, so leaving him behind didn’t feel like an option.”

Alex had been offered housing before, but without somewhere safe for Charlie, they felt stuck. That changed when Victim Support connected Alex with Pet Refuge.

“Once I knew Charlie could go somewhere safe, we were able to leave.”

While Charlie was safe in our care, Alex could focus on their children and rebuilding their lives. Regular photos and updates helped keep them connected.

“I knew he was okay. It was such a relief.”

And when the family was ready to be reunited, Charlie returned home with food, treats, flea treatment and a new lead to help them get back on their feet together.

“Without Pet Refuge, I don’t think I would have left.”

Today, Alex’s children are back at school, Alex is volunteering and the family is rebuilding — with Charlie right there beside them.

Pet Refuge doesn’t just provide a safe place for pets. It helps remove one of the barriers that can prevent people from escaping family violence, so families can reach safety without leaving a much-loved pet behind. ❤️
