Coffee, cake, and conversations about death?
It might sound unusual, but that's exactly what's happening at Canterbury's "Death Café" this week - and it's part of something bigger. This week is Dying Matters Week (7–13 September), now in its third year, with over 200 events happening around New Zealand to get people talking openly about death, dying, grief and end-of-life planning.
Organiser Katy Mandeno put it perfectly: it's about "letting a bit of light into this topic that, for lots of reasons, we have attached a bit of fear to over the years." Death Café host Melanie Mayell says that despite the subject matter, people always leave "feeling a lot lighter."
We couldn't agree more. Talking about death doesn't have to be morbid - it can be one of the most caring things you do for the people you love. And since it's also Wills Month, there's no better time to turn that conversation into action.
Having an up-to-date Will means your wishes are clear, your loved ones are protected, and the people you care about aren't left guessing during an already difficult time. It's a small step that makes a huge difference.
If you don't have a Will, or haven't reviewed yours in a while, get in touch with our team this Wills Month. We're here to make the process simple, straightforward, and (dare we say it) even a little reassuring.
