The White Room Creative Space

The White Room Creative Space With its own dedicated creative space, it has become an exciting and successful place where artists can explore and showcase their artistic potential.

The White Room is a creative studio that works to removes barriers to making art for people with learning disabilities and other under-served community members. The White Room Community Creative Space was developed in late 2014 in response to a growing need to foster and develop the creative talent of people supported by SkillWise. The White Room advocates for the artists inclusion in contemporary arts practice through supporting their art making, participation in exhibitions and other creative projects. Recently we have begun a new outreach programme, which aims to increase access to, and participation in, creative activities for groups of people in Ōtautahi who experience barriers to participation.

Open Call for Artists - We’re kicking off next year's exhibition programme at Eastside Gallery with "First Steps 2027," our much‑loved annual exhibition for artists who are new, or nearly new, to exhibiting.

Works can be in any style, theme and medium that can be exhibited at Eastside, but must be no older than 2025.

Fee-free. Nothing over $800 (not-for-sale works also welcome).

There’s a 3x limit for "First Steps," so you can register your interest even if you’ve taken part in the show before. It's the first exhibition in our annual artist development series, created to support artists as they develop their practice. The series continues with "Stride by Stride" and "Momentum." Alongside these, we run around 4–6 themed open call exhibitions each year. Exhibition experience is irrelevant for those shows, and there’s no limit to how many times an artist can be involved.

Register by: 12 January 2027
Exhibition dates: 2 - 27 February 2027

To register your interest: Forms are available to download from our website: https://villageartscentre.org.nz/open-call-for-local-artists/

Please spread the word!

Location: 388 Worcester St, Christchurch (free parking & entry)

Open Wed-Thu: 11am-5pm | Fri-Sat: 10am-5pm

We offer 10 weekly classes & activities, run exhibitions and events in Eastside and the Mini and hire our spaces for arts activities and events evenings and weekends.

We are committed to artist development through our exhibition programme and community development via participation in our creative spaces.

In the last financial year we exhibited the work of 354 local artists.

2027 marks our 30th year.
