We are pleased to announce the promotion of Tahliya to Office Coordinator!

Since joining our team as an Office Junior in September 2024, Tahliya has become an invaluable member of our team. Through her positive attitude, willingness to help, and commitment to learning and growth, she has consistently gone above and beyond in her role.

As Office Coordinator, Tahliya will take on additional responsibilities supporting the management team, while continuing to assist at our front desk and clients. So clients, never fear, you'll still be seeing and hearing from Tahliya!

We’re proud to celebrate an exciting milestone for another member of the Godfreys Law team. Mikayla has officially become a Solicitor!

Mikayla joined Godfreys Law as a Law Clerk in August 2024 while completing her Bachelor of Laws at the University of Canterbury. Following her admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand, Mikayla is now practising in our Employment and Commercial teams.

To mark the occasion, we sat down with Mikayla to talk about her unexpected path into law, her journey through university, Admission Day and what comes next.

The team at Godfreys Law was proud to take part in Life Education Trust - Canterbury’s annual Wear Yellow for Harold Day on Friday, joining businesses, schools, and community organisations across the region in support of an important cause.

Wear Yellow for Harold Day raises awareness and funds for Life Education Trust, helping to deliver vital health and wellbeing education programmes to young people throughout Canterbury. Through the work of Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education educators, thousands of students gain valuable knowledge and skills that support their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

To show our support, the Godfreys Law team swapped our usual office attire for yellow and embraced the opportunity to contribute to a cause that has a positive impact on local children and their families.

At Godfreys Law, we believe strong communities are built by investing in future generations. We are pleased to support organisations such as Canterbury Life Education Trust, whose work helps equip young people with the confidence, resilience, and knowledge they need to thrive.

The Retirement Villages Act 2003 (the Act) sets out the rights and obligations of retirement village operators, residents, and anyone considering moving into a retirement village.

The Government is in the process of reviewing the Retirement Villages Act 2003. The review is looking at whether the law currently gives enough protection to residents, while keeping retirement villages sustainable. The changes proposed are aiming to improve resident protection, rebalance the rights and responsibilities of residents and retirement villages, and help the sector continue to grow and be able to offer a range of housing options for New Zealand’s increasing aging population.

These proposed changes are not law as of yet, and a draft bill is estimated to be introduced to parliament mid-2026. Here’s a summary of what changes are being proposed:

𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝘂𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄

New Zealand’s new roadside drug testing regime is now in force, and drivers should be prepared to see it used more widely across the country.

For many years, drug driving enforcement has largely depended on Police forming a suspicion that a driver may be impaired, followed by a compulsory impairment test and, in some cases, a blood test.

The new regime adds a separate infringement-based process. In practical terms, Police can now use oral fluid screening tests at the roadside to check for recent drug use, even where there is no obvious sign of impairment.

A positive roadside result does not automatically mean a conviction, or even an immediate infringement notice. The process has several steps, and drivers should understand what Police can require, what happens after a positive result, and what limited defences may be available.
