A burst water pipe underneath a driveway! 💦

Not all plumbing problems are easy to spot — and sometimes the biggest problems are hidden underground.

Our MJR team was called out to a property this week in Cashmere, Christchurch, where a leaking underground water pipe needed urgent attention.

The job involved:

🔹 Locating the source of the leak
🔹 Excavating a section of the driveway to access the damaged pipe
🔹 Repairing the damaged pipework
🔹 Restoring the water supply

WOULD YOU KNOW IF YOUR HOT-WATER CYLINDER WAS STARTING TO FAIL?

Most hot-water cylinders sit quietly in a cupboard doing their job every day — which makes them very easy to forget about.

Until there’s a problem.

While age can be an indicator, it isn't the whole story. We’ve seen cylinders last for decades, and we've also replaced cylinders that have failed much sooner than expected.

There can be warning signs to look out for:

💧 Moisture, drips or staining around the cylinder
🔧 Rust or corrosion
🚿 Changes in the amount of hot water available
🌡️ Water not heating as it normally does
🔊 Unusual noises
⚠️ Problems with valves or other components

But sometimes there may be very little warning before a cylinder fails.

THIS HOT-WATER CYLINDER WAS ONLY SIX YEARS OLD

It’s easy to assume that hot-water cylinders fail simply because they’re old. Often age plays a part. But not always.

We attended this Christchurch property where the hot-water cylinder had been manufactured in May 2020.

Water was leaking from around the element and, when investigated, there was visible rust and corrosion internally.

The cylinder needed replacing.

It’s a good example of why we think the best time to understand your hot-water replacement options is before you actually need them.

Because if your cylinder suddenly fails, the easiest decision can be to simply replace it with another version of what was already there.

But like-for-like isn't your only option.

Depending on your home, household and hot-water usage, heat-pump hot water could be worth considering.

Many traditional hot-water cylinders have an expected service life of around 10–15 years, although some last considerably longer and others fail much sooner.

And here in Christchurch, there’s an interesting reason why that matters right now.

We’re now more than 15 years on from the beginning of the Canterbury earthquake sequence. Many homes had repairs, renovations and services replaced in the years that followed.

So if your hot-water cylinder dates from that period, it might be worth checking exactly how old it is.
