If your business collects customer information, even something as simple as names and email addresses, the Privacy Act 2020 already applies to you.

If a data breach happens and it's likely to cause someone serious harm, you're legally required to report it, both to the Privacy Commissioner and often to the people affected. Not realising a breach happened isn't a defence.

Most businesses only start thinking about this once something's already gone wrong.

Immigration New Zealand is retiring its old Visitor Visa forms, and the deadline lands mid-October.

From 24 September 2026, new applications for most Visitor Visa categories (including the Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa) have to go through the enhanced Immigration Online system. The old forms stay open only for applications already in draft, and only until 8 October 2026. After that, unfinished drafts are deleted for good.

If you've got family wanting to visit for Christmas or summer, now's the time to sort it.

Litigation abuse, using court proceedings to harass, exhaust or control an ex-partner, is now something courts have real power to shut down.

Under the Victims of Family Violence Act, judges can restrict a person from filing new proceedings or continuing existing ones for up to three years, or five in serious cases, once litigation abuse is established.

Payment disputes in construction don't have to end in a drawn-out court battle.

The Construction Contracts Act sets out a formal process for retentions, payment claims, and payment schedules, and if a payer doesn't respond to a payment claim correctly and on time, they may be treated as accepting the full amount claimed.

Whether you're a contractor chasing a retention or a client disputing an invoice, knowing the process, and the deadlines within it, can be the difference between getting paid and getting stuck.

Buying your first home is exciting, but the sale and purchase agreement is not the place to rush.

Before you sign, it's worth checking: are there LIM or building report conditions you need? Is the title clear of surprises, like easements, covenants, or cross-lease quirks? What does your finance condition actually cover, and by when?

A good agreement protects you just as much as it protects the seller. A few days of due diligence now can save months of headaches later.

An existing business can look like a shortcut, an established customer base, systems already in place, income from day one.

But the real risk sits in the details you can't see on a walk-through.

Before you commit, you'll want a clear picture of: what's actually included in the sale (assets, stock, contracts, IP); any outstanding liabilities, leases, or restraint of trade clauses that transfer with the business; and whether the numbers you've been shown hold up under scrutiny.

Getting legal advice before you sign a sale and purchase agreement, not after, is what protects your investment.

On 19 September we mark Suffrage Day, the anniversary of New Zealand becoming the first self-governing country where women won the right to vote.

But the vote wasn't the whole story. It took the Women's Parliamentary Rights Act 1919, another 26 years, before women could actually stand as candidates for Parliament. It was 1933 before Elizabeth McCombs became the country's first elected woman MP.

Legal rights and lived equality don't always move at the same pace. That gap is part of why representation in law still matters today.

Employment law changed on 21 February 2026, and if you haven't reviewed your agreements since, now's the time.

Some of the biggest shifts: new hires can go straight onto an individual agreement instead of defaulting to collective terms for the first 30 days. There's a new "gateway test" for contractor status.

And employees earning over $200,000 a year can no longer bring a personal grievance for unjustified dismissal, unless both parties agree in writing to keep that protection.

If you're an employer with existing agreements, you've got a 12-month window before the $200k threshold applies to them, but that window is closing. Get your agreements reviewed before it becomes a problem.

From 24 August 2026, Immigration New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category has changed, and for a lot of applicants, it's genuinely good news.

Trades and technicians now have a clearer route to residence. Wage thresholds are more forgiving too: you only need to meet the median wage from when you started your qualifying work experience, not a higher rate at the time you apply.

New Zealand qualifications now also earn extra points over equivalent overseas ones. If your application stalled because of the old wage settings or points system, it's worth another look.
