Changes to wage requirements for some Green List applicants

Changes have been made to the wage requirement for some Green List Work to Residence applicants.

Previously, some people in 18 Green List occupations were exempt from meeting the required wage threshold while gaining the New Zealand work experience needed for residence. This exemption was introduced when the median wage requirement was first added in 2023, to help workers already working or about to start working in certain high-demand occupations.

The 5 October change clarifies that the exemption applies only to workers in the 18 affected occupations who both:

- applied for a visa before 29 September 2023
- gained some of their eligible work experience while holding that visa.

Where people are eligible for the exemption, it can only apply to either the work experience or job at the time of residence application. This means if the applicant did not earn the relevant wage threshold while gaining work experience, their job or job offer must meet the wage threshold when they apply for residence (or vice versa).

Apply early for summer holiday Visitor Visas

Now is the time for your clients to start preparing their travel plans to be in New Zealand for Christmas and the summer holidays.

We encourage you to submit your clients’ applications as soon as possible.

High volumes of people apply for Visitor Visas at this time of the year. You can help by submitting applications early with all the information and evidence we need to get them processed quickly.

This includes:

- an acceptable photo
- proof they have enough money or a sponsor to cover their costs here
- evidence showing they have genuine reasons for visiting
- English translations of all documents not in English.

Eligible passport holders from China and Pacific Island Forum countries travelling from Australia may not need a Visitor Visa. If they hold an eligible Australian visa, they may be able to enter New Zealand with an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) and stay for up to 3 months.

Changes to Parent Resident Visa category from 5 October
From 5 October 2026, the Parent Resident Visa expressions of interest (EOIs) move to a new hybrid selection model.

About 90% of EOIs will be selected in date order through the pool, while 10% will continue to be selected through a random ballot. The total number of visas that can be approved in principle each year remains at 2,500.

This change gives greater priority and certainty to people who have been waiting longer, while retaining an opportunity for newer applicants to be selected earlier.

People with EOIs that expire on or after 5 October do not need to do anything. Information about pool positions will be made available soon after the new model is implemented.

Hepatitis B and C removed from resident visa high-cost health list

From 3 August 2026, hepatitis B and C was removed from the list of high-cost health conditions used when assessing if resident visa applicants have an acceptable standard of health.

The change reflects the reduced cost of treating these conditions. It means applicants with hepatitis B or C will not automatically be assessed as not meeting the acceptable standard of health requirement.

Instead, our medical assessors will consider the specific medical circumstances of each individual with hepatitis B or C.

We have also updated the wording for several conditions on the high-cost health conditions list:

- major psychiatric illness and/or addiction will only be included where significant support is required
- severe autoimmune disease wording has been updated to recognise a wider range of lower-cost treatment options
- renal and hepatic disorders wording has been clarified to better reflect the conditions intended to be included on the list.

The changes give clarity to applicants and medical assessors and ensure the conditions are genuinely imposing significant costs and/or demands on New Zealand's health or education services.
