Talking to your children about separation or divorce is one of the most difficult conversation to have.

It’s understandable to worry about saying the wrong thing, or wonder how much they should know. 🤔

There isn’t one perfect way to have the conversation. What can help though, is giving them some certainty about what is changing, answering their questions honestly, and reminding them that they are loved and cared for. 🫶

We’ve joined up with Justine Lamont from Good to Great Parenting to put together some things to think about before talking to your kids about your separation and divorce.

This is a saying which feels truer than ever.

At every stage of your child's growth you need people who are there for you.
No matter what. These people are the ones who have your back, even when it's a tough time. Especially when you feel uncertain about what is the next step to take. You might be wondering is this much is too much or not enough.

When you don't know if you're getting it right you might not need advice, it could be a listening ear. A way to share what it's like for you.

We all need the village. The community. Friends, family, or people who understand the same kinds of struggles and are willing to walk alongside you. Sometimes you need another mind to help you think things through. Sometimes you just need a safe place to let off steam.

It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a village at every stage. You deserve people who walk beside you as you navigate being a parent who is parenting in the best way you know how.

Every parent wants their child to come to them when they need help the most. Figuring out how we make that more likely to happen isn't intuitive. There's no magic wand we can wave that will do this.

Parenting asks a lot from us and there are times when it's easy to get stuck, especially when the emotions are high.

How hard is it to be the voice of reason when we're in the middle of helping a child who we care deeply about?!

Many parents struggle with what to say and do. Our children may not hear what we intend them to hear. Sometimes it's only later on that we realise it didn't land the way we intended.

Because the adults, the parent who has that mature brain, gets to be the one who can figure out what could happen differently next time.

It's in the growth moments that you can meet your child where they are, even in the uncomfortable and messy middle of learning. Here's some words which can help you to do that.

Teaching children to stand up for themselves at school and in their friendships matters. Every child benefits from this knowledge and can learn how to do it by watching others.

Encourage them to speak up in different settings or social situations.

Notice when they do it and they'll feel confident to do it when you are not there.
