It was a privilege to attend the New Zealand International Film Festival screening of Last Man Standing, a compelling documentary chronicling the life and legacy of the late Jim Anderton.

The film traces Jim Anderton’s remarkable political journey from his principled stand against the economic reforms of the late 1980s, to founding the NewLabour Party and later the Alliance, and Progressive, and ultimately helping shape landmark policies such as Kiwibank, paid parental leave, and interest-free student loans and many more. More than a political biography, it is a thoughtful reflection on conviction, integrity, and the courage to stand by one’s principles in the face of prevailing orthodoxy.

What made the experience particularly meaningful for me was seeing both my name and Patel Nand Legal acknowledged in the film’s credits as legal advisers. It was a genuine honour to have contributed, in our own small way, to preserving an important chapter of New Zealand’s political history.

Congratulations to director Gerd Pohlmann, producers Hon Matt Robson and Alister Barry, and everyone involved in bringing this significant story to the screen. It is a documentary that will not only resonate with those who lived through that era but will also introduce a new generation of New Zealanders to one of the country’s most principled and influential political leaders.

It was a pleasure and privilege to be part of the unveiling of the fresh identity for Ramwall Group, and to share a few reflections on a journey I have been fortunate to witness over the past approximately four decades.

By way of background the history of Sami family's business background From 1988 to the turn of millennium in year 2000 Arjun Sami as a young entrepreneur with his second eldest brother late Shiv Swami ventured into multiple entrepreneurial activities ranging from retail, import, export, wholesaling, largest supermarkets in Ōtara towncentre, Mangere towncentre under the banner of Foodworld and Dawson Rd supermarket under banner of SuperValue and was later joined by the eldest brother Kanda Sami and another brother Satya Narayan before expanding into import,export and wholesaling under banner of Ambience impex. They also expanded into commercial and industrial property ownership of where the business were operated from.

In year 2000 The property development and construction business started under the banner of "Landmarx" which was later some 20 years back rebranded under the logo of Ramwall Homes. I am proud to have been part of the historical setting of the group's growth with the first rebranding in 2006 and the most latest refreshed rebranding of the Ramwall banner.

A new logo may symbolise change, but a respected brand is built over many years through integrity, trust, consistency and the relationships it nurtures. Those are the qualities that have defined Ramwall Group long before its refreshed identity.

Having known Arjun Sami and the Sami family for nearly 40 years, I have seen first-hand how enduring values, inherited across generations, continue to shape the organisation today. Those values are now being embraced by the next generation, ensuring that Ramwall's future is firmly anchored in the principles upon which it was built.

One quality I have always admired in Arjun is his willingness to keep learning. True leadership is found in humility, and I have personally learnt much from this remarkable entrepreneur. As the old saying reminds us, wisdom is not measured merely by age, but by an openness to continue learning and growing.

Equally inspiring is Ramwall Group's longstanding commitment to giving back. Through its support of organisations such as Friends of Fiji Health NZ and many other charitable initiatives, the Group has demonstrated that genuine success is measured not only by the buildings we construct, but by the lives we positively impact.

I was also delighted to see how the lessons from the recent Community Housing Providers Conference in Samoa are already translating into meaningful collaboration between Ramwall Group, Penina Trust, Don Ha Team, and Patel Nand Legal, as we work together to create sustainable pathways for housing and stronger communities.

This rebranding is not a departure from Ramwall's past. It is a continuation of its legacy, expressed with renewed purpose and a bold vision for the future.

Congratulations to Arjun, Mohini, Shiva, Shivana, Mansha, the entire Sami family, the Ramwall team, and everyone who has contributed to this remarkable journey. May this exciting new chapter be the finest yet, and may Ramwall continue to be recognised not only for the developments it creates, but for the values it represents, the relationships it builds, and the positive difference it makes in our communities.

Last week, Director Radhe Nand attended the CHP conference in Samoa and was part of the Ramwall team as a panelist. See what he had to say about his experience below:

One of the contributions I could make from a lawyers point of view was how pacific and immigrant communities can get into home ownership, asset protection and intergenerational wealth.

There were huge learnings that sustainable housing outcomes require more than policy, they require genuine partnerships between communities, housing providers, government financers and the private sector.

The pacific context reminds us that housing must reflect culture, well-being, resilience, and intergenerational aspirations. It was encouraging to see practical discussions focused on turning vision into delivery and creating pathways that strengthen both communities and economic participation.

Congratulations to Penina Trust, Ramwall Homes and all involved for leading such an important conversations.

I fully endorse the timeless wisdom of Ramjethmalani, one of greatest lawyers India has produced. His one word “architect” speaks volumes.
The law is not an end in itself, it is a living instrument of justice.

A lawyer who knows only the law may understand rules, but not fairness/justice, not people, and not the consequences of those rules in real life.
As Jethmalani ji, rightly said, lawyers must be architects and builders of the nation. We are not mere interpreters of statutes, we are custodians of justice, defenders of rights, and contributors to the social, political and economic fabric of our society.
A true lawyer must have wider qualities including but not limited to the following:

• a thinker, not just a technician;
• a problem-solver, not just an advisor;
• a person of integrity, not just intelligence;
• commercially aware, yet ethically grounded;
• courageous in standing for what is right, even when it is not easy.

Lawyers must bridge law with humanity, law with fairness, and law with progress. When we rise above simply “knowing the law” and instead use it to serve people and society with the knowledge of practice of law, we truly honour our profession, and play our part in building a stronger nation.
