More residence pathways are opening under the Skilled Migrant Category but the rules are technical.
From 24 August 2026, there will be 3 possible SMC pathways:
✨ Points-based pathway
✨ Skilled Work Experience pathway
✨ Trades and Technician pathway
This may be good news for some skilled migrants, experienced workers, tradespeople, technicians and employers wanting to retain valued migrant staff.
⚠️ BUT eligibility is not based on job title alone.
The role, ANZSCO match, wage, work experience, qualifications, NZQA, English evidence, Red / Amber List issues, employer documentation and genuine employment requirements all matter.
A new pathway does not automatically mean you qualify.
A strong residence strategy needs to be mapped before you submit an EOI or residence application.
