Our amazing Research Coordinator, Ms. attended the 6th UN-RBHR forum.

RBHR is an annual event co-organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO), International Organization for Migration (IOM), Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), United
Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights (UNWG).

Each year the forum centers around different theme to promote responsible business conduct across the world.

This year's theme was: 'The remedy blueprint; bridging gaps and accelerating access'

Key Takeaways (Shared by Ms. Jha)

1. The need for a business house to act responsibly and comply with human rights instruments, and adhere to due diligence.

2. The need to center all corporate and government discussions around, human rights due diligence both for the people and the environment

3. The discussions around the rights of migrant workers, modern-day slavery, building a safe workplace for everyone, and corporate environment responsibility only find greater relevance with each passing day.

4. Discussion around the need for CSDDD in Asia, does Asia really need a CSDDD, will CSDDD become the magic pill creating accountability, transparency in the global supply chain?

5. The forum also drew attention to the role of National Contact Points for Responsible Business Conduct, in providing avenues for remedy in the Asia-Pacific.

BHR successfully conducted the seventh episode of BHR discussion series on ‘the rights of street vendors’ last Saturday.

We would like to extend out heartfelt gratitude towards our expert Subin Mulmi sir for leading and our research coordinator Shikha Jha for facilitating the session.

Here are a few key points made by the speaker during the session,
1.Nepal as a party to international treaties, conventions and resolutions on human rights, has an obligation to ensure the rights of vendors.
2.Street Vendors currently fall under the tax net for paying 'consumption tax'. Additionally, with proper development of policies they can be brought under a defined and minimal tax net which also assures direct-indirect benefit to them in return.
3. Concerned authorities must be willing to undergo discussion with activists, street vendor trade union representatives for a temporary solution.
4. For long-term solution, mapping of street vendors based on their type of work and area of business, impact assessment and policy development must be done through equal participation of government body, human right activist and street vendor representatives.

Thank you everyone for joining us..

Initiative for Business and Human Rights stands as a pioneering institution in Nepal established to promote human rights compliance in business activities. Throughout our journey since 2021, we have stayed firm to our goal of fostering advocacy and dialogue on the issues of Business and Human Rights in home and abroad.

We are committed to advocate for the rights ranging from right to employment, dignified life, health, safety, equal pay, and against sexual violence, slavery, poverty, hunger, torture, and what not? Our team sees 2023 as another great year to advance our effort and take our advocacy to new heights.

We would like to express our utmost gratitude to everyone who was a part of this journey either as contributors, critics or advisors. This month we present you a special edition of the magazine including the compilation of incidents of business-related human rights abuses that were highlighted by IBHR in the year 2022. We urge the Government to pay extra attention on these incidents and provide remedy to the victims.

"Over 6500 migrants succumbing to death, the pervading discriminatory rules and the workers still remaining underpaid clearly shows that the commitment to protect is nothing but a sham" writes Shikha Jha.
