The Chinese Initiative on International Law -CIIL

The Chinese Initiative on International Law -CIIL CIIL is an independent non-governmental organization operating within and outside of the Greater China Region to promote international law and justice.

Founded by a group of legal professionals and academics in the Region, CIIL currently runs two distinct and interrelated projects: (1) The Chinese Initiative on International Criminal Justice (CIICJ), a project promoting better understanding of international criminal justice and international criminal law as well as their related judicial processes; (2) The International Moot Court Centre, a proje

ct enhancing international legal education through engaging in moot court competitions. The Chinese Initiative intends to use the project of CIICJ to introduce the development of one of the most revolutionary sphere of international law namely the international criminal law to a wider audience. The Chinese Initiative sees this effort can foster an benign interaction and debate on the role of state sovereignty as a foundation of international law, a predominantly upheld principle in the region. On the other hand, through the work of the International Moot Court Centre, The Chinese Initiative can help upcoming generations of legal professionals to have direct aceess to the frontier of international law, to appreciate the role of the international lawyers and be well acquainted with the necessary qualities to become one of them. CIIL is in the process of creating an International Justice Clinic. A pilot programme for the Clinic was launched in July 2014.

Today concluded the International Criminal Court Chinese Moot Court Competition of 2020, hosted by the Chinese Initiative on International Law. Although neither national oral debate nor the final round in The Hague is available due to the pandemic, the CIIL successfully organized several webinars on international organization careers, international law study, and a virtual invitational oral competition among three universities. Over 60 universities in China participated in the competition of this year, and the teams were ranked by their excellent written memos.

This year, owing to the unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19, national administrator Wenqi Zhu took the courageous step of canceling the oral rounds of the Jessup Competition in China. With invaluable cooperation from Professor Zhu, the 56 competing universities in China, and more than 400 judges from over 25 countries, we were able to convert the 2020 Chinese National Rounds into a multi-level competition based on the written submissions. We congratulate the 6 teams that have come out on top of the Chinese National Rounds: Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Peking University, University of International Business and Economics, Wuhan University Law School, Shanghai University of International Business and Economics!
