📌 AI shapes how we see and understand the world, but who shapes these algorithms?

At the 2025 ESIL Conference in Berlin, Asser Institute researcher Taylor Woodcock presented on military applications of AI and the role of industry in the reconstruction of international law.

She argued that while AI systems are often framed as objective and neutral, their development involves many subjective design choices that cascade into military decision-making and shape legal reasoning.

By driving innovation, industry is not only influencing how militaries act, but also how law itself is imagined and interpreted. This research shows why it is time to take industry seriously as an actor in the reconstruction of international law.

“Refugees don’t need favours. They have rights. But it is about time that all of us look in the mirror and take responsibility for the protection of these rights. That is what UNHCR continues to do, even in difficult times of funding cuts.”

Jean-Nicolas Beuze, UNHCR representative for the EU, Ireland and Benelux, discussed the rights of refugees on the islands of Aruba and Curaçao with Prof. Dr. Ernst Hirsch Ballin (human rights and constitutional law expert), Hans Hermans (co-director of Hidden Life), Victoria Capriles (Asser Institute) and journalist Nadia Moussaid on World Peace Day at the T.M.C. Asser Instituut after the screening of the documentary “Hidden Life”.

📽️ The documentary “Hidden Life” sheds light on Venezuelans in Aruba and Curaçao who, despite fleeing crisis, cannot claim asylum. Living in a legal vacuum, they face detention, exploitation, and years of separation from their families. Nine refugees speak openly about life in the shadows of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

🔴 Authoritarian governments are reaching across borders to silence critics.

In a new policy brief for the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism, researcher Niki Siampakou examines how states use surveillance, intimidation, and even policing tools such as Interpol Red Notices against dissidents abroad.

The report warns these tactics are a threat to security in host states, undermine the rule of law, and create fear in diaspora communities. It calls for stronger laws, better monitoring, and support for victims.

When international law settles disputes, why are the most affected people left out of the room?

Stephanie Triefus (Asser Institute) has been awarded the 2025 Praemium Erasmianum Dissertation Prize, one of the most prestigious honours for PhD research in the Netherlands. Her thesis sheds light on a pressing issue in international investment law: how foreign investor-state disputes often ignore the voices of the very communities whose lives are most disrupted.

Through the lens of the Roșia Montană case in Romania, Triefus shows how legal processes sidelined local people while decisions were made in international tribunals. Her work questions assumptions about who really holds power in these disputes and who gets heard.
