IILAT’s online debate “The Secrets of Advocacy before international Criminal Tribunals” took place on Tuesday 16 November 2021. It was a great success, with the attendance and participation of more than 150 participants worldwide.

Our four panelists, Judge Joanna Korner QC (UK), Kate Gibson (Australia), Thembile Segoete (Lesotho), Francisco Cox (Chile) and moderator Ben Gumpert QC (UK) discussed the nature of advocacy before international courts and their experience in various international courtrooms. They discussed challenges such as gender bias and language barriers. The panelists shared their recommendations to overcome some of them as well as other practical tips.

The panelists also emphasised the necessity for lawyers, wherever they come from and no matter how experienced they are, to depart from their legal traditions and adapt to the hybrid nature of international criminal proceedings. To do so, counsel need to be regularly trained on the specificities of advocacy before international courts.

The panelists supported IILAT’s role to provide bespoke advocacy training – both oral and written – to lawyers from all legal backgrounds. They also welcomed IILAT’s ambition to contribute, through its various activities, to a more inclusive and diverse international criminal justice system.

And what was the key message of the night? One is not born a great advocate. One becomes a great advocate through training and practice. And finally: Do not try to copy anyone. Just be yourself!
