Sometimes, when you ask business owners to structure their businesses, and be on top of corporate governance and compliance, they'll say once their businesses get to the government's notice, they will start having the obligations to pay tax.

While this may be somewhat true, it is never a good reason to not do what is necessary. Besides, whether you do the needful or not, the taxes will one way or the other, come. Trust me, government agencies know how to get to you as your business grows. So, why not do the needful before you are forced to do it, with a touch of fines.

Advantages of businesses paying taxes and filing tax returns include:

📌You avoid legal penalties
📌Trust and confidence in your business. You can easily attract partners and investors because you appear as a serious business
📌Tax waivers and other tax incentives when you eventually need them
📌You will be contributing to the development of the country
📌You avoid tax identity theft
📌You're in tune with your numbers and can properly monitor growth and plan.

If you may need any help with TIN creation, tax remittances and tax clearance, you should let us talk in the DM.

Since we are in the next of kin discussion era, I think some education may not hurt.

A next of kin is that person that another person names as the person who is the closest to them, or who can be contacted in case of emergencies or in a situation where the person cannot communicate directly. Usually, one's next of kin is one's relative- usually the closest person to one by blood or affinity.

Since one's next of kin is typically one's relative, it is not unusual then that such persons are also usually one of those that will inherit from one upon one's demise.

However, it is not sacrosanct that the next of kin is the one automatically entitled to all of one's ownings upon one's demise. If the deceased leaves a will, the properties will be shared according to the will. And even where there is no will, there will be letters of administration obtained by the administrators of the deceased's estate (who may include or not include the named next of kin) who will now have the right to manage and distribute the properties.

Bottom line is that that you're named someone's next of kin does not automatically mean that you own everything that person owns upon their demise. In some cases, it could even be mere responsibilities and not so much benefits for you. There is no institution eg bank that you will approach now and expected to be paid the deceased's bank balances simply because you were named their next of kin.

Next of kin is not so much a flex thing. It is more of a duty thing.

These people can however

📌Own passive investments/shares in private companies
📌Be involved in Agriculture
📌Be a member or Trustee of a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO)

Civil Servants are generally prohibited from being directors of private companies, as well as taking up any managerial role at any privates company.

For civil servants who may be interested in pursuing businesses, there are a options for them within the allowance of the law.

Perhaps, your parents bought you some shares when you didn't even know what they were, or you bought for yourself when you heard of an offer or you contributed to the founding of a company through the purchase of its equity.

By whatever means you acquired shares of a particular company, you are a shareholder and one of the owners of the company and by that happenstance, you automatically are entitled to all the benefits that come with holding company shares. Some of the shares are:

1. Dividends: As a part owner of a company, you are entitled to dividends. Dividend is a cash reward made by a company to its owners out of the profit made at the end of a financial year. The amount you are entitled to depends on the volume of your shareholding and the profit made

2. Asset ownership: Like the way you acquire and own land, buildings, cars, jewelries etc, which are assets, when you buy shares they become part of your assets. You may decide to sell some shares to raise money for other projects

3. Savings: Investing in shares avails you the opportunity to save your income in assets that have a high degree of security and that will appreciate with time

4. Prestige: It is honourable to be part owner of a company especially if the company is one with great reputation and excellent corporate image

5. Retirement Planning:  The dividends from shares provide regular flow of income to keep life going. Shares could also be sold to meet some medical expenses at old age when one no longer works.

So, why wouldn't you buy into a company and own a part of it?
