How to cite properly

I know you are sitting there wondering:
“Why do I have to cite something everyone already knows?”

You are not wrong for asking.

Let’s be real — you and I both know garri is made from cassava. Nobody is arguing that. It is common knowledge.

But in academic writing, things work a little differently.

Imagine this:

You are telling a story.
You say:
“John is a hardworking student.”

Someone asks:
“How do you know?”

If you reply:
“I just know.”

It doesn’t sound convincing, does it?

Academic research is similar.

When you state information, you are expected to show where it comes from.

Not because the fact itself is doubtful — but because research values evidence.

So even when you write:
“Garri is made from cassava.”

A supervisor might say:
Cite it.

What they mean is:
Show a source that supports the statement.

It strengthens your work.
It proves you did proper research.
It follows academic standards.
