As a professional or even a beginner in your chosen field of endeavor, you should never try to be on all available social media platforms worldwide.
Some specific platforms work better for some specific professions/ industries.
Now, to dive straight into it, here's a list of social media platforms that work best for different professions:
1. Visual Artists/ photographers/ Designers
- Instagram:
This platform is ideal for showcasing visual portfolios, behind-the-scenes content, and engaging with followers through images and videos.
- Behance:
This platform is specifically designed for creatives to showcase their portfolios and connect with potential clients and collaborators.
2. Freelance Writers/Journalists/ Freedom Fighters/ Pastors/ Politicians
- Twitter: This platform is great for sharing articles, engaging in discussions, networking with other writers and journalists, church members, party loyalists/ supporters; and following industry news.
- LinkedIn: This platform is effective for establishing a professional profile, sharing published work, connecting with editors and publishers, and finding freelance opportunities.
3. Fitness Trainers/Personal Coaches
- Instagram: This platform is perfect for sharing workout routines, fitness tips, motivational content, client transformations, and interacting with followers through stories and live sessions.
- YouTube: This platform is ideal for uploading workout videos, tutorials, and motivational speeches, as well as building a dedicated subscriber base.
4. Real Estate Consultants/ Agents
- Facebook: This platform is useful for promoting property listings, hosting virtual tours, sharing market insights, and engaging with potential buyers and sellers through targeted advertising and groups. As you know, I use this platform a lot and a major crop of my clients come from Facebook and YouTube.
- LinkedIn: This platform is highly effective for networking with other real estate professionals, sharing industry updates, and establishing credibility with potential clients.
5. Restaurant Owners/ Chefs
- Instagram: This platform is excellent for showcasing mouth-watering food photos, sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of the kitchen, announcing special menu items or events, and engaging with foodie communities.
- Facebook: This platform is very useful for promoting events, sharing customer reviews and recommendations, and responding to inquiries and reservations in real-time.
6. Small Business Owners/Entrepreneurs
- LinkedIn: If you own a small business or building a brand (whether personal or corporate), then you must take this platform seriously because it highly valuable for networking with industry peers, sharing business updates, seeking professional advice, and attracting potential clients or investors.
- Twitter: This platform is also effective for engaging in conversations, sharing industry news, promoting products or services, and providing customer support in a public forum.
7. Fashion Designers/Boutique Owners
- Instagram: For anything that the eyes can see (I mean products or services perfect for showcasing fashion collections, behind-the-scenes footage of runway shows or photo shoots, collaborating with influencers, and running sponsored posts to reach a wider audience.
- Pinterest: This platform is ideal for curating inspirational mood boards, sharing fashion trends and styling tips, and driving traffic to e-commerce websites or online stores. It's also great for bloggers in terms of blog growth and traffic generation.
Each profession may find certain platforms more effective based on their target audience, content type, and marketing objectives. It's also imperative to experiment with different platforms and strategies to determine what works best for your specific profession and goals.
Like in my case, YouTube was my first major money-maker as a real estate consultant. I landed clients beyond the shores of Nigeria by just s.hooting and uploading some very simple marketing videos on YouTube.
