On Friday, August 2, 2024, I had the privilege of speaking at the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum Eket Branch's Annual Capacity Building Workshop 2024 in Akwa Ibom State. The event's theme, "The Dynamics of Legal Practice in Nigeria," provided a fitting backdrop for my presentation on "Unlocking Value in Legal Practice as a Chartered Secretary and Administrator."

To address this critical topic, I conducted an in-depth analysis of Nigeria's legal competitive landscape using Porter's 5-Forces Framework. This framework revealed the key drivers of competition in the legal industry, including:

- Threats from rival law firms
- Threat of substitution
- Legal and business factors
- Client demands
- Competitive rivalry

My paper proposed strategies for legal professionals and law practices to gain and sustain a competitive edge. Notably, I emphasized the value of incorporating Chartered Secretaries and administrators into their service offerings, which can unlock significant benefits for clients.

By adopting this approach, legal practitioners can differentiate themselves and enhance their value proposition."

The event was graced by notable personalities including Dr (Mrs) Idorenyin Eyo, Associate Professor of Law, University of Uyo, who served as the Chairperson of the event.

FILING OF ANNUAL RETURNS

Do you operate a business registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)?

Have you filed an Annual Return for your enterprise, limited company or NGO since incorporation?

An Annual Return Filing is NOT the same thing as your Tax Filing.

Let me tell you what an Annual Return is:

By the provisions of Section 417 of CAMA 2020, filing of annual returns is a mandatory compliance requirement every enterprise, private limited company, public limited company or incorporated trustees must carry out once in a year.

An important purpose for filing an annual return is to bring to the CAC's attention that the company is still active (whether it is engaging in business activities or not).

CONSEQUENCES OF NON COMPLIANCE
1. Payment of default penalties
2. Inability to carry out post incorporation filings such as change of directors, alteration of Memart etc
3. Delisting defaulting companies from the register

The CAC has just commenced the process of delisting defaulting companies.
