1. The principle of law which has been applied by the Courts over years is that statutes that vest rights on an individual should be interpreted to respect such rights even when there are ambiguity in the section of the statute vesting that right and the Court would adopt a construction which will favour the vested right of the individual. See DIDE vs. SELEKTIMIBI (2010) ALL FWLR (Pt. 509) 583.
2. "Where an enactment confers a power or imposes a duty, the power may be exercised and the duty shall be performed from time to time as occasion requires." See Section 10(1) of the Interpretation Act.

Palaba (not real name) was a hawker somewhere around Mile 3. Sometimes in 2017 he saw a crowd gathered and he went to see what was happening. Before he could ask questions Police arrived and everybody scampered. Unfortunately he was nabbed by the police and accused of cultism. He definitely is not a cultist.

Till today, he is languishing in the Port Harcourt prisons for a crime he did not commit.

4 years after he was arrested for a crime he did not commit just because he was indigent.

"It is for this reason that my Mother died last year. It was grievous for her that the only son that sustained her is locked up without trials and that she is unable to visit him since he was arrested due to lack of money"

This is the story a woman told me about her son arrested since 2018 without trial and languishing in the Port Harcourt prisons. Although we have resolved to take up the case pro bono but there are thousands of them in there. Not only do we want them to be physically free if they are innocent but we want to lead them to Christ.

We need your prayers only as we set up on this assignment.

When you see this picture what readily comes to your mind? Bad girls, spoilt children and so on.

But what comes to our mind is that they are captives of the devil being led to hell. Yes, the Devil has captured them and leading them straight to hell just as he had captured some of us with lying, hatred, greed and other subtle sins.

These girls are the reason Jesus came to earth and died on the cross of Calvary. We cannot allow Jesus death be in vain. We are going for the lost, captive and those that have gone astray.

So what we do, we pray for them every day. Whenever we encounter them, we show them love to win their souls for Christ. You can do so too in your own little way.

My childhood friend told me a pathetic story on phone last night. He is a pastor with the Assemblies of God and runs a prison ministry. He was at the port Harcourt prison yesterday. He told me the story of an Ogoni minor. Yes! the boy is just 16 years. He was hawking on the road to make ends meet when he was rounded up by security agencies since 2019. That was how he ended up at the Port Harcourt prisons. He has not seen his parents or a lawyer and he has resigned his fate to be in prison till he dies.

Of course we have resolved to take up his case pro bono (free) but above all, we have resolved to lead him to Christ after he might have gained his freedom. We are keen on depopulating hell and populating Heaven especially from the prisons.

You can do a lot for the thousand of innocents in the prisons. The least you can do is pray for them everyday or assist those doing something about them.

Have you taken out time lately to give a thought to Nigerian Prisoners? Well, you may think they are in prison for what they have done. That's not always the case. So many of them are innocent. Innocent like you. They are just there because either they are the product of circumstances or the product of somebody emotion or negligent.

Now you know, there are so much you can do about it. You can pray about it or you can support those doing something about it. You too can be a product of such circumstances that is why you should feel concerned. It may be your little contribution to make the world a better place.
