On the 29th of April, 2022 we continued our conversations on the Electoral Act, 2022.

We discussed the Register of Voters and the Procedure for Voters Registration.

The lead discussant was the President of the Legal Aid CDS, O. R. Pepple.

Noteworthy is that a person who initially registered in another location can now vote in his new location.

This can be done by simply bringing an application to the State Resident Electoral Commisioner for your name to be included in the Transferred Voters List of the new location.

On the 22nd of April, the Legal Aid Community Development Service, Lokoja began discussion on the Electoral Act, 2022.

The reason for this discussion is obvious. The election bells are ringing.🔔🔔🔔

And we believe that in times like this, our voices should be heard in all and sundry.

On this date, we discussed Part 1and Part 2 of the Act.

Part 1 talks extensively on the Commission itself and its functions and modus operandi whole Part 2 talks about the Secretary of the Commission.

The discussion was led by T. V. Babalola Esq.

The major points are summarized thus;
- The Commssion is a corporate body so they can own properties, sue, be sued and others.

- The Act provides for the Commision to have an investment fund. Also the Act provides that the Commision can recieve aids and grants, carry out investments with the money allocated by the Federal Government.

The purpose of this was yo help maintain the independence of the commission.

The members of the CDS raised various concerns as to the legality of the commission getting involved in investments and also receiving grants from politicians with ulterior motives.

The big question that arose was whether or not these aids would impede the independence of the commision.

- Another innovation of this Act is the provision that all the funds required by the commission must be provided one year before the election.

-It is now a crime for an INEC staff to be a member or hold a membership card of any political party.

Thank you T. V. Babalola for this intellectual enlightenment. Thanks to all those who made interesting contributions to the conversation.😊
