Behind every great song or creative work lies the question of how well it is protected. In today’s fast-growing creative industry, the intersection of law and creativity is a vital topic that cannot be overemphasized in the creative industry. In recognition of the importance of this conversation, our firm’s Technology, Media & Entertainment (TME) Sector hosted a capacity-building session on Intellectual Property and Data Protection for on the 11th of September 2025 as part of our TME Knowledge sharing initiative.

NDPC Launches Sector-Wide Data Protection Probe.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has initiated a compliance investigation across multiple sectors, giving 21 days (until 15 September 2025) for affected organisations to prove compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA), 2023.

The sweep covers:
🔹 10 pension companies
🔹 35 insurance companies
🔹 136 gaming companies
🔹 795 financial services firms
🔹 392 insurance brokers

Organisations must demonstrate:
✅ Filing of 2024 Compliance Audit Returns
✅ Appointment/designation of a Data Protection Officer (DPO)
✅ Summary of data protection safeguards
✅ Registration as a Data Controller/Processor of Major Importance

Failure to comply could result in enforcement orders, administrative fines, or criminal prosecution.

📌 Affected organizations are strongly advised to engage a licensed Data Protection Compliance Organisation (DPCO) to meet their NDPA obligations before the deadline.
