The Mahr or wedding gift is given to the wife by the husband and is an essential part of marriage. It is not the bride price. In some traditions and cultures the Bride price belongs to the family and it is shared by them. Mahr is also not the various gifts brought by the groom and his family like clothes, jewelery, make up and other apparel. It also has nothing to do with the customary gifts of foodstuffs and cash gifts to various members of the family or groups. Generally, Mahr has no fixed amount. It is based on the woman’s demand and if it can be met by the husband. If she says I want a box of chocolates so be it if he can provide it. If she says teach me verses of the Quran as my gift,it is just fine. If she asks for a million naira, a farm ,a house , an Aeroplane and he has the means and they agree to it that is her Mahr. If she decides to give a portion of the Gift to her husband if is acceptable. A bride who has been gifted a farm can ask the husband to keep the poultry part of the Farm. This means she can give him back part of it at her volition,it is her choice. What she does with her Mahr is also her prerogative.

Peace is a vital part of life in any community and any action that threatens this peace is frown upon. Without peace you would not be reading this or watching your favorite Films and Skits because even our telecom service providers may need to shut down their activities. Much as being part of a group or an assembly of people is a fundamental human right, some assembly fall into a range of activities that breach the peace. When 2 or more people gather with the intention of disturbing the peace or making others to disturb the peace, it is a crime punishable under the Law as such assembly has become unlawful. When that gathering degenerates into a Riot which more often than not happens due to raised tempers,it is a crime. Sometimes a person in authority needs to step in to disperse the rioters usually a law enforcement officer, a member or official of the Judiciary. Where Rioters violently prevent such a person from dispersing the crowd,it is an offence. 10 years free accommodation, free clothing, free food, medical care and even education/training awaits an Offender at a Correctional Center on conviction.

Be law abiding. Remain on the right side of the law.

“Mosa the Law! Good Morning” said Aunty Ejopo.
“Aunty Ejopo you seem very bright this morning, good morning” Mosa responded.
“I am o” says Aunty Ejopo. “You know I have been looking for a new accommodation and I have been trying to get the 2 bedroom flat in Baba Landlord’s compound. Now Baba Landlord’s Agent said the flat will be vacant by next week. So I can move in”.
“I didn’t know that the young man was leaving and he does not look like he is moving soon. I hope you have the correct information. ”replied Mosa
“I do, in fact he told me that they are removing the Meter and disconnecting the water to the Flat this weekend so that Brother Poser can pack out quickly”.she said gleefully. “He said if the Broda is stubborn, they will remove the windows and even get Officer Clem to arrest him”.
Mosa bursts into laughter. “Oga Mosa why are you laughing now, what’s funny?” said Aunty Ejopo surprised at Mosa’s reaction.
“ Agent and Baba Landlord want to disconnect electricity to the flat, stop water supply, remove windows and they are even planning to get the Tenant arrested? Do they think they are in a jungle? So Baba Landlord and his Agent don’t know that Landlord and Tenant relationship is governed by Law to ensure peace, justice and harmony.””
“Aunty you have not found a Flat yet, all the steps the Agent told you they are planning to take are illegal. Please ask them if his Tenancy has expired and they have given him the proper notices required by Law". If he is a yearly tenant it is 6 months notice, if monthly it is 3 months and if it is for a fixed period, then it is when that period is over he gets only a 7 day Notice. If they use this hooligan method Baba Landlord won’t get the Flat quickly and he may even end up paying damages to the young man” explained Mosa.
“Oga Mosa, this is long story o,I thought I have a place already”. Said Aunty Ejopo looking sad and deflated.
“If they follow the right processes it does not take so long."

There are prohibitions to who you can marry under Islamic law.

Some of these prohibitions are permanent meaning under no circumstances would they be valid.

So a Muslim cannot marry his mother, his step mothers( so a man cannot take over his late father's youngest wife as done in some cultures) his grandmothers of both sides, his daughters and granddaughters, his sisters ,his father’s sisters, his mother’s sisters, his brother’s daughters, his foster mother, his foster mother’s sister, his sister’s daughters, his foster sisters, his wife’s mother and his step daughter.

However, where he meets her before he and her mother consummate their union he can still marry her.

A man can’t marry his son’s wife except if he is an adopted son.

So, I hear you say what does the Country do for me?

Well, one of the first things it does for you is to protect your Fundamental Rights as a human being.
These Rights are guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federation. These Rights are yours irrespective of your gender, tribe, your religion or your age.

The first and most fundamental is Right to life

Right to life is fundamental to all persons and a life must not be taken intentionally but a person can lose that Right. Where a person commits murder, such a person loses his own Right to Life. If a person resists lawful arrest or tries to escape from lawful custody and is killed in the process, the Right is lost.

A typical example is escaping armed robbers or escaping Prisoners, their Right to Life is lost here. If the person is part of a riot , insurrection or Mutiny and is killed in the process or if a person attacks a person or property and reasonable force has to be used to defend against such attack and such person is killed, the right is lost.
That you have a Right to Life guaranteed by the Constitution is not a ticket to unruly and dangerous behavior that can lead to unlawful loss of life.
