In what could be a win for intellectual property in Africa, a South African court has ordered Vodacom, Africa’s second largest mobile operator, to make a huge payout to South African inventor, Nkosana Makate. Makate is credited with having invented the ā€˜Please Call me’ functionality, a popular function in the mobile telecom industry allowing users to use USSD even when they don’t have credit to call.

Vodacom had offered to pay Makate about $3 million but the inventor is demanding over $1.2 billion in compensation, arguing that the figure constituted 5% of revenue from the group’s $13.2 billion in revenue from the service over an 18-year period. The court ruled for Vodacom to make a better offer.

As per the court’s ruling, Makate, ā€œis entitled to be paid 5% of the total voice revenue generated from the PCM productā€ from March 2001 to March 2021 based on an intellectual property agreement signed between the two parties.

Other African telcos that have had legal wrangles with inventors include Econet Wireless in Zimbabwe which has previously been accused of stealing a panic response project idea that it is now implementing under its home surveillance offering. The company however denies this.

Over in Kenya, mobile operator Safaricom has also been accused of stealing a ā€œreverse callā€ feature—which enables callers to transfer billing costs to contacts they are calling—that had earlier been allegedly pitched to the company by innovator, Davidson Ivusa.

NDLEA revealed the identities of the suspected drug barons who allegedly colluded with DSP Abba Kyari and four others to ferry illicit drugs into the country.

Abba Kyari and his team were declared wanted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday.

The suspects had been arrested by the police and handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation.

The Deputy Force Public Relations Officer (DFPRO), Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement in Abuja that some NDLEA officials were allegedly involved in the drug deal.

He said that the police had carried out discreet investigation when it received a request from the NDLEA on February 10.

ā€œIn line with standard administrative procedure of the Force, the Inspector General of Police ordered a high-level, discreet, and in-house investigation into the allegations.

ā€œThe interim investigations report revealed that two international drug couriers identified as Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus, both males, were arrested at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, on Jan. 19.

ā€œThe suspects were arrested upon their arrival from Addis Ababa aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight ET917.

According to him, the two arrested drug couriers also confirmed that they have been enjoying this relationship with the NDLEA officers at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport since 2021.

He said the narcotics, in the instant case of Jan. 19, was identified and cleared by the NDLEA officers as customary, having received their pre-departure photographs and other details prior to their arrival in Enugu.

Mr Adejobi said police investigations report had earlier indicted Kyari, who had been on suspension for alleged involvement in a fraud case being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

He said Kyari’s involvement in the recent allegation occurred while his suspension from service was subsisting.

ā€œOn the strength of the findings of the in-house Police Investigation Panel, the I-G has ordered the immediate arrest and transfer of all the indicted police officers to the NDLEA for conclusive investigation.

An old tradition but kept in the dark for too long has made its appearance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia this month.

Markets and shops in Al Khobar in east Saudi Arabia have been filled with all sorts of red. Valentine’s day is no longer an occasion that is hidden, and the ban on shops is no longer being enforced. Selling red gifts is now widely seen as an occasion reflecting the depth of human sentiment.

This has allowed people to exchange red gifts and beautiful memories among their loved ones.

Salem al-Salem said his sales recorded more than 2,000 roses in mid-February due to their popularity on this day. He noted that each rose cost 50 Saudi riyals.

Flowers are not the only gift item on display, with other Valentine favorites on sale including sweets and gifts of all kinds, he added.
