Shadows...

On this very day, my friends were having a conversation which I was supposed to be a part of, but logged out of because it was getting too serious for me.

It was a really hot day and we were out in the sun, and the discussion was making the day seem hotter. I just opened my camera app to take some pictures and I saw the shadows on the ground. It had never occurred to me to have my shadow's picture taken but she turned out to be quite pretty.

I realised then that you'd never know a person by their shadow. No matter how familiar you are with the curves or edges on someone's body, you'd have great difficulty identifying them through their shadow.

It re-emphasized for me how that shadows are only a reflection of our outward appearance, but they're not who we are. Our shadows might look like us, but they don't do very good jobs of showing us off the exact way we are. Some days they are longer and other days shorter.

While I enjoyed taking pictures of my shadow, I enjoyed having my pictures taken even more, that's why the last slide is my favourite.

Don't make the mistake of living your life as a shadow of yourself, show who you are, complete and whole. Be you and do you!

It's the 3rd day of Christmas and I hope to share my thoughts for the next 9 days.

I had a conversation with a friend today and part of it was in french.

My little knowledge of the language was only sufficient for formalities so we had to switch to English.

It made me think how difficult it must be to communicate with someone who doesn't speak your language. You have to resort to using signs, symbols, and even pictures.

Inasmuch as it can be quite interesting, it is much more difficult and tiring to communicate in that manner.

I could easily get lost in a law court proceedings if the lawyers decide to pull out all their law jargon, but I'd never feel that way when speaking with my friend.

Your readers wanna feel like they're part of your inner circle and not just another reader in a crowd. Learn to write to your audience as though they're your friends, that way you they not only understand your piece but find it interesting as well.

Talk to me like I'm your friend...

Imagine having the world at your fingertips...

All you need do is snap your fingers and you'll have world powers at your back and call, or wave a wand to turn a raggedy dress into a pretty ball gown.

Imagine having sunrise at sunset and 12 colours in the rainbow, imagine having wings like a bird and feet like the hind.

We all have our stories in us, all we need to write embedded deep within our powerful minds.

Don't be scared to let your mind roam, making the impossible possible.

Just imagine...

Don't wait for a big story, it'll probably never come. Make the small ones into one big story...

Take your little details and put them together, learn to make the bits and pieces count for something. Appreciate them as a part of the whole.

Don't wait for the unusual things to happen, make the usual unusual, make a story about brushing your teeth by 6:00 a.m. interesting before you write about the shooting star that appears once in a century.

As a writer, you must appreciate the little things; the fact that you got on a bus (which you get on everyday), or you took coffee (which you take everyday).

It is the mundane things that make you you. Write about them. Write about your exercise routine and your prayer time.

The perfect date with that special someone will make for a good read but it won't happen everyday. Appreciate the mundane things by writing about them.

They make you a better writer and storyteller.

Have you ever had a special someone send you a message that made you feel it was a one-sided relationship?

Perhaps the message made you wonder if they just found a message somewhere and copied it to you, or it made you feel like they weren't talking to you...

Either way, it's very heartbreaking to find that the person you think loves you doesn't, because they cannot or will not take out time to tell you from their heart how they truly feel.

If you've ever felt that way, you definitely have an idea of how your readers feel when you write cliches and technical jargon in the name of sounding intellectual. Sound like you! Your readers want to know you, they want to feel what you feel and see the world through your eyes, just let them.

Don't hide behind the grammar, big words, and perfect punctuation. Don't be afraid to let your emotions show. As a matter of fact, they'll trust you more when you can be vulnerable with them.

Why don't you write a piece about how you really feel, and allow your readers to resonate with you on your level. It's always very rewarding for both parties.

No more masks, show the real you...

I was in a meeting today and someone who came in late asked me about all that had been discussed.

I was in the process of briefing her, repeating most of what had been said, when she caught my drift and summarised what I was saying in a headline.

I was shocked as I realized that she understood that we both needed to pay attention to the meeting, so she saved me the time I would have used in explaining all that had gone in in her absence by just using seven words.

There are times when you need the words, times when you need the details, be sure to make them all count- that's relevance.

But most importantly, you must realise when to give headlines or summaries that capture your thoughts perfectly and use less words to pass across your message.

Storytelling is an interesting form of writing but it would do better in your blog posts than on your statuses and stories. Don't assume everyone will stay around to read because it's interesting; some might, but given the fact that they're just scrolling to see pictures, they might scroll past without getting your message.

Using less words and eliminating redundancies always make for a better read.

How many times do you cancel or erase while writing? A lot? I bet so.

Is there something wrong with erasing a lot while writing? As a matter of fact, there is. You only erase that much because you second guess yourself and seek to be perfect, not necessarily because you're wrong.

One of my favourite quotes on writing is "write drunk, edit sober" - a misattribution to Ernest Hemingway.

Hold on now! I don't encourage anyone to take this quote literally, although that's how it was intended when spoken.

However, you need to write as though you're drunk. Write your heart out first and leave your head out of it till your first draft is done. Allow your creativity run wild and let your editor tame her.

Write forgetting that you have a backspace key on your keyboard. Write out your scenes the exact way you picture them, write your ideas without wondering how your readers will accept them. Write, and just write.

When you are done writing, your backspace key can find it's way back to your keyboard. That way, you'd have engaged both the right and left side of your brain, making your piece generally beautiful and not just technical.

For the past three weeks I've had commitments that took my attention and drained me emotionally, physically, and mentally, more than I thought they would.

It was like being on a rollercoaster, up now and down the next second, the drop being felt by your whole being.

I would say I never wanna experience that again but I'd be lying. If that's what it would take to get me where I'm going, you bet I'm gonna open my eyes wide, scream out loud and enjoy the ride the best I can.

I want to apologise for leaving you hanging. I'll give a heads up next time stuff like this is gonna happen.

I want to believe you've kept busy, filling your notepads and diaries up with words; spoken and unspoken.

If you wanna know about my engagements these past weeks, ask and I'll share.

Yours truly,
Abra❤

Who else spells rhythm as rythym?

Last night I was typing on my computer and I needed to type the word rhythm, I ended up typing rythym. I knew it was wrong, so I checked my dictionary, (which is always with me by the way, either soft or hard copy) and I discovered the correct spelling.

What happened to me isn't foreign to most of us, the difference is in the way we handle it.

Now if asked in a spelling bee, I'm confident I'll know the right spelling, but I was tired and my brain didn't need the extra stress...

Therefore, immediately I noticed that my spelling was wrong (because my subconscious knows the right spelling), I just checked my dictionary.

I didn't beat myself up for not knowing how to spell rhythm🤷‍♀️ I didn't assume I was right either because I actually know how to spell the word.

I simply checked my dictionary and went on with my life.

Life has not so subtle ways of reminding us that we're human; don't try to fight it, accept it and be better for it.

Ever spelt a word you knew wrongly before?

The fight for the future is one we have always fought in our dreams.

Now it's out in the open and we are confident we have all it takes to win.

The reality, though, tells a completely different story.

I'd rather we have strategies well thought out for the fight for .

Strategies much needed now that it's evident this is beyond the initial and cry.

This is the beginning of the life we've only dreamed of.

The beginning of the future we've only imagined.

Wisdom is a much needed guide in these times, and James 1 vs 5 makes it clear that: "If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking."

As we've seen the government is relentless. They're shameless and will go to any length.

Are we prepared for their shenanigans?

Are we ready for the next few days, weeks, months, and even years?

It's gonna be a hard shake if we don't get ready.

The Nigeria we seek won't happen overnight; there'll be a lot more stops in this journey, and even detours if we're been honest.

But being unprepared for all of it is going to be our undoing.

So I suggest we have a drawing board, consult it often.
