The meeting, led by Asiwaju Dapo Odumosu, the Chairman of the campaign organization, marked a significant milestone in Okenla’s push for the local government seat.

In front of an audience filled with prominent political leaders and party members, Okenla introduced neon green as the official campaign color, symbolizing progress, rejuvenation, and a new era for Ijebu Ode. The campaign’s motto, “Elevate,” was also highlighted, underscoring Okenla’s vision to take Ijebu Ode to greater heights through innovation, unity, and inclusive development.

The event saw the presence of notable leaders including Alhaji Ibraheem Adedeji (Baylord), Hon. Ladi Owodunni, Hon. Kehinde Ajetumobi (PDP Party Chairman), Hon. Yusuf Oludaisi, as well as directors of the campaign organization and other key members. They all expressed their support and confidence in Okenla’s leadership, affirming that his vision aligns with the party’s goals for sustainable growth and development in the local government.

Speaking at the event, Okenla shared his plans to rejuvenate Ijebu Ode through improved infrastructure, primary health care , youth empowerment, and job creation, especially in the IT sector. He emphasized the importance of unity among the people, promising to run an inclusive administration that prioritizes the needs of the community.

Asiwaju Dapo Odumosu, the Campaign Chairman, reiterated the PDP’s full backing of Okenla’s candidacy, praising his leadership qualities and his ability to drive meaningful change. I am not a saint, I am not a prophet or pastor; I am not even a regular church-goer but one thing I know for sure, one certainty I can wager my whole life on as indeed I have done is that at the final bell, good will triumph over evil.

There is no doubt that the Nigerian criminal justice system is heavily flawed in practice. There is a grave misconception of the procedure concerning plea-bargaining that raises some concerns. I read somewhere recently that the Nigerian Police after reaching a plea-bargain with some accused persons went ahead to inform the judge to reduce the sentence pertaining to the offence. I believe that this is not the right procedure. It should not be that the prosecutor would tell the judge what sentence to pass in any criminal case before the court but rather the procedure is that after a successful plea bargain agreement, the prosecutor withdraws all charges except the lesser charge or charges to which the accused has pleaded guilty to under the plea-bargain arrangement thus restricting the court to consider and pass the appropriate sentence only on that lesser charge or charges presented before it.
The Prosecution and the Defence are both equal parties before the court and neither of them can dictate to or compel the court to pass a sentence which is not appropriate to the offence being tried before it.
In a situation where the Prosecutor dictates to the Court what sentence to pass on an accused person, that situation is no longer plea-bargaining but a potential miscarriage of justice. The judiciary should not be treated as an appendage of the Police.
