Voices. Dignity. Justice.

We’re honored to be featured in Law Digest (Winter 2025, Issue 37) with a powerful review of the realities facing incarcerated women in Nigeria and the work driving change.

The article, “Advancing Justice and Dignity: A Contemporary Review of Women’s Incarceration and Support Initiatives in Nigeria,” shines a light on the urgent realities faced by incarcerated women across Nigeria and the collective work being done to restore dignity, expand access to justice, and drive meaningful reform within the criminal justice system.

The quotes shared in this post capture the heart of that message:
that justice must be humane, that dignity is non-negotiable, and that support can transform lives.
This recognition is more than a feature; it is a call to action.

A call to listen.
A call to advocate.
A call to stand for women whose voices are too often unheard.

We invite you to read the full feature, reflect on its insights, and share it within your networks to help amplify this important conversation.
Together, we move closer to a system rooted in justice, compassion, and true rehabilitation.

WIPSI is proud to join the JAALS Foundation Walk for Justice on 7th February 2026, as we continue to advocate for access to justice, dignity, and human rights for women and girls, especially those behind bars and beyond.

Every walk is a reminder that justice is not abstract—it is lived, pursued, and defended collectively. We walk in solidarity with reformers, advocates, and all who believe that justice must be accessible to all.

See you at the convergence point.

Let’s walk for justice.

Access to Justice Begins with Access to a Lawyer ⚖️

In Nigeria, the right to legal representation is a constitutional guarantee. Under Section 36(6)(c) of the 1999 Constitution, everyone charged with a criminal offence has the right to defend themselves in person or by a legal practitioner of their choice. This right is essential to a fair hearing.

When a person is denied access to a lawyer—whether by law enforcement or due to poverty—their right to fair trial is threatened. Questioning without counsel, prolonged detention, and wrongful convictions often follow.

For those who cannot afford a lawyer, the government provides support through the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, established under the Legal Aid Act, to offer free legal services to indigent persons. Pro bono services by lawyers and civil society groups further bridge the gap, though they remain voluntary.

The law also allows individuals to represent themselves, but courts must ensure such a choice is informed and voluntary, especially in serious cases.

At WIPSI, we believe no one should be denied justice because they lack a voice or resources. Justice must be accessible to all.

2025 in Review ✨

From the walls of the Keffi Correctional Centre to classrooms filled with over 300 young girls learning the power of mentorship. From hosting an essay competition that amplified young voices, to standing in honour of our late Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Hon. Justice E. A. Ojuolape. From walking for justice at the JAALS Walk, to reaching communities and showing up boldly at the NBA Human Rights Day event. 2025 was a year of purpose, advocacy, and impact.

None of this was possible without our partners, volunteers, donors, friends, and supporters who stood with us every step of the way. Thank you for believing in the work we do and in the women and girls we serve 🤍

As we step into 2026, we are just getting started. There is so much more to do, and we invite you to be part of the journey — by donating, volunteering, and amplifying our mission.

Together, we move closer to justice, dignity, and restoration.

A DECADE OF ADVOCACY

Ten Years of Impact.
Today, we mark a significant milestone—10 years of the Women in Prison Support Initiative (WIPSI). From 2016 to 2026, our journey has been one of purpose, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice for women within the criminal justice system.

For a decade, WIPSI has stood as a voice for the unheard, a bridge to justice for the marginalised, and a platform for hope and restoration. Through our Prevention, Correction, and Rehabilitation approach, we have provided legal support, advocacy, empowerment programmes, and reintegration pathways for women whose stories might otherwise remain untold.

This anniversary is not just a celebration of time, but of lives impacted, systems challenged, and futures restored. It is a tribute to the courage of the women we serve, the dedication of our team and volunteers, the trust of our partners, and the unwavering support of all who believe in restorative justice.

As we reflect on the past ten years, we also look ahead with renewed resolve—to deepen our impact, strengthen our advocacy, and continue empowering women while restoring hope, dignity, and justice.
Here’s to 10 years of standing for justice and to many more years of transformative advocacy.

One year on, we pause to remember and honour the life and legacy of our late Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Hon. Justice Edward Adepoju Ojuolape (Rtd.).

His unwavering commitment to justice, service, and compassion continues to shape our values and guide our work at WIPSI. Though he is no longer with us, his vision lives on in every life touched and every cause upheld.

Forever remembered. Always honoured. 🕊️

Today, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of the men and women of our Armed Forces who serve in defence of our nation.

On Armed Forces Remembrance Day, WIPSI pays tribute to those who have given their lives in the line of duty and extends our gratitude to all serving and retired personnel. We recognise that justice, peace, and national security are deeply interconnected, and we reaffirm our respect for those who stand to protect the values of unity, safety, and service.

We remember. We honour. We stand in solidarity.

At WIPSI, our mission is clear: to be the foremost platform providing preventive, corrective, and rehabilitative pro bono support for imprisoned women across Nigeria.

Our vision is rooted in restorative justice — championing a system where the offender, the offended, and society emerge better through sustainable stakeholder engagement.

We are driven by one core objective: bridging the gap between disadvantaged women and proficient legal counsel, ensuring access to justice, fair verdicts, and dignity for those who cannot afford representation.

As we step into 2026, our commitment deepens.
We are set to carry out more prison outreaches, strengthen collaborations, and provide increased relief materials to inmates — because justice must be humane, accessible, and transformative.
This is more than advocacy. This is impact.

As we celebrate the joy of Christmas, we remain committed to hope, dignity, and second chances for women in correctional facilities.

May this season remind us of the power of compassion, community, and restoration.

We are deeply proud to celebrate our Founder, Dr. Oluwayemisi Sosanya, who was honoured with an Appreciation Award at the NBA Lagos International Human Rights Day Conference, held last Wednesday. 🏆

The award was presented in recognition of her contributions as a panelist, reflecting her insightful engagement and unwavering commitment to justice, dignity, and human rights advocacy. In her absence, the WIPSI team gladly received the award on her behalf. We remain inspired by her leadership and resolute in our mission to advance a more just and humane society.
