Happy New Month!
My read for last month (August) was "Youยฒ" (You Squared) - It is a motivational book that challenges conventional wisdom about success and personal development. Price Pritchett introduces the concept of making "quantum leaps," which are dramatic, exponential improvements in your results, rather than small, gradual steps. The core idea is that you don't have to work harder to achieve more; instead, you should work smarter by shifting your approach and mindset.

The book is structured around a series of concise, actionable principles:

Aiming Higher: Pritchett encourages readers to set audacious goals that push beyond their current limits. He argues that aiming higher often requires less effort than you might think because it forces you to focus and act with greater intensity.

Trusting the Process: The book emphasizes the importance of trusting your instincts and intuition when pursuing your goals. Pritchett suggests that your subconscious mind knows more than you realize and can guide you toward the right actions.

Breaking Away from Convention: Pritchett advises against following the crowd or sticking to traditional methods. Instead, he encourages thinking outside the box and embracing unconventional strategies that can lead to significant breakthroughs.

Acting with Speed and Certainty: The author stresses the importance of decisive action. Hesitation and over-analysis can hold you back, so it's crucial to act swiftly and confidently.

Taking Risks: Pritchett asserts that risk-taking is essential for making quantum leaps. Playing it safe will only lead to incremental progress, whereas embracing uncertainty and stepping out of your comfort zone can result in transformative success.

Throughout "Youยฒ," Pritchett uses anecdotes and examples to illustrate how these principles can lead to extraordinary achievements in both personal and professional life. The book is designed to be a quick read, providing a burst of inspiration and practical advice for those looking to make a significant impact.

Your home might not be the asset you think it is. In fact, it could be your biggest liability and certainly not the most effective retirement fund. While this may sound provocative, let me explain.

Robert Kiyosaki, the author of the best-selling book Rich Dad, Poor Dad, who has amassed a net worth of approximately $80 million, delves into the mindset differences between the wealthy and the middle class. He explains that the wealthy use their income to acquire assets that generate further income, which then covers their liabilities. On the other hand, the middle class often funnel their income directly into liabilities, like mortgages and car loans, leaving them stuck in a cycle of working just to keep up with their financial obligations.

Assets vs. Liabilities
Kiyosaki provides a simple distinction: assets are things that "put money into your pocket," while liabilities are "things that take money out of your pocket." By this definition, your primary residence is likely your most significant liability. Consider how much money constantly flows out of your pocket to maintain your homeโ€”mortgage payments, furniture, repairs, garden upkeep, and paint jobs, to name a few. These ongoing expenses make it clear that your home is far from putting money into your pocket.

While your home might appreciate in value over time, it's essential to recognize that this appreciation may be less than in previous decades, especially with current low-interest rates. If interest rates rise, as many expect, property values might stagnate, further diminishing the potential for significant capital gains. But that's not the main point I want you to take away.

Your House is Not Your Pension
What truly concerns me is when people say, "I don't need to worry about my pensionโ€”my house is my pension," or "My primary focus is paying off the mortgage."

Let's break this down: Imagine your house is worth USD400,000 (500m naira), and you consider it your retirement fund. If your plan is to downsize, you'd have to sell your home and buy a smaller one, perhaps for USD200,000 (300m naira). Most people I speak with want to live in a comfortable, albeit smaller, home, even if it's a significant downgrade. But you'll still have to maintain this new property.

This scenario leaves you with just one-third of your "pension" (USD200,000) in liquid assets, while you continue to incur costs on the new home. This isn't exactly an appealing retirement strategy.

To complicate matters, when the time comes, many people find themselves unwilling to move. They become emotionally attached to the home they've lived in for years and are reluctant to make such a drastic change.

I'm not suggesting that homeownership is a bad thing or that you can't make money from your property. What I'm saying is that your home should be part of a broader financial plan that includes savings and investments for retirement, not a replacement for them.

When you view it this way, your home may not be the great asset you once thought. Stop treating your house like a pension pot, and you'll be far better off financially.

We all focus on change and what might change in the future, but as Jeff Bezos fan once remarked, what will stay the same is just as important, if not more so.

In that context, I will summarize this weekโ€™s content, which I have read or watched, starting with Same as Ever by Morgan Housel

Housel speaks about what never changes, such as peopleโ€™s likelihood of being influenced by incentives.

In particular, he recommends that business owners and investors adapt to change but recognize certain timeless principles.

For those who prefer video content, he was interviewed on the Tim Ferris show seven months ago.

Are you a business owner? Well, Jim Collins' book Beyond Entrepreneurship 2.0 is a good read.

He gave four tips that stood out for me.

The need to create a solid foundation. Have a clear vision for the company, creating core ideas and values that will allow you to attract the right individuals to the business.

Ensure you develop a disciplined culture that everybody in the company follows.

Can you make sure that innovation is pursued? That doesnโ€™t mean being an inventor, but it does mean looking not to stand still once you are established.

Focus on the long term, even if it affects short-term earnings.

Finally, this week, the Eurozone area started cutting interest rates. With US interest rates set to stay higher than the Eurozone for longer, will this result in a weaker Euro?

Moreover, considering this rate cut is the first of many expected in the Eurozone, the UK and the US, you should expect lower fixed rates on offer from banks shortly.
