I run a small electronics business.
Last week, I sent one of my sales representatives to deliver some phones and laptops worth about ₦4 million to a customer. He left with the goods in the morning and was supposed to return after making the delivery.

By evening, his phone was switched off. The customer later called me and said my employee never came to his shop. I tried calling him throughout the night, but his phone remained off.

The next morning, I discovered that he had also removed his WhatsApp profile picture and stopped responding to everyone at work.
I don't know where he is or what he has done with the goods.

Madam Law, what can I do? Can I report him to the Police for taking my goods and disappearing?

Let me quickly clear up something.
I’ve noticed that whenever I make a post about something that has to do with civil liability, some of the comments are:
Arrest the person, send the person to prison why has the police not arrested them?.

And it makes me realise that a lot of people still don't know the difference between a civil matter and a criminal matter. Not every person who owes you money is a criminal not every person who breaches a contract should be arrested, not every landlord tenant dispute is a criminal case and not every disagreement between two people requires the police.

A civil matter is generally about enforcing or protecting private rights for example, recovering a debt, enforcing a contract, claiming damages or resolving a property dispute.

A criminal matter, on the other hand, involves conduct that the law treats as an offence against the state, such as theft, assault, fraud or other offences created by law.

And sometimes, one situation can have both civil and criminal aspects.
For example, if someone collects your money through fraudulent means, there could be a criminal issue while you may also have a civil claim to recover your money.

So when you see me discussing a person's civil liability, please don't immediately ask why haven't they arrested the person?. The appropriate legal remedy depends on what the person actually did.

I hired a contractor to renovate my building.
We agreed on a total price of ₦8 million for the work.He asked me to pay 70% upfront so he could buy materials and commence the project. I paid ₦5.6 million, and we signed an agreement stating the work he was expected to carry out.
He started the renovation, but after some time, he stopped coming to the site.

When I contacted him, he told me that he had completed enough work and that I should pay the remaining ₦2.4 million before he would continue. I reminded him that the agreement was for the entire renovation, not half of it.

He said the prices of building materials had increased and that he could no longer complete the work for the original price. I told him that he should either complete the work according to our agreement or refund the money for the work he had not done, he refused.

Now he is threatening to remove some of the materials he has already installed because, according to him, they belong to him until I pay the balance.

Madam Law, I have already paid 70% of the contract price.Can the contractor stop halfway and demand the balance before completing the agreed work simply because the cost of materials has increased?
And can he remove materials he has already installed from my building?

My neighbour connected his drainage to mine without asking me.
I noticed it a few months ago, but I didn't make an issue of it because I thought he was only trying to find a way to control the water coming from his compound.

But whenever it rains heavily, the water from his compound now flows through the drainage into my compound. The water is usually dirty and carries mud and waste.

At first, it was just flooding part of my compound. But recently, the water started entering the back part of my house and damaged some of my belongings.I confronted my neighbour and asked him to disconnect his drainage and provide a proper way of directing his water.

He told me that there was nothing wrong with what he did because water must flow somewhereand that the drainage was already there before I moved into the compound.
I have begged him several times, but he has refused to do anything.

Now the rainy season has started again, and I am worried that the next heavy rain could cause even more damage.

Madam Law, can my neighbour legally divert his drainage into mine without my consent and cause water from his compound to flow into my property?What can I do to make him stop and recover the cost of the damage already caused?

You can marry someone without telling them you have children.
Yes, you read that correctly.

Having a child from a previous relationship does not, by itself, automatically make a subsequent marriage invalid simply because the new spouse was not told before the wedding.

But wait being legally married does not mean the deception has no consequences. Imagine a man meets a woman and tells her he has never had a child. They date, she eventually marries him, and only after the marriage does she discover that he already has two children from a previous relationship.
The fact that he concealed the children does not automatically mean the marriage is now cancelled.

Marriage law does not work that way.However, if the person deliberately lied or concealed important facts in a way that affected the other person's consent to the marriage, the circumstances can become legally significant.

And beyond the legal question, there is the practical issue.
Children don't disappear because their parent got married to someone else. There can be continuing responsibilities concerning maintenance, parenting, inheritance and other family matters.

So if you already have children, especially children from a previous relationship, tell the person you intend to marry. Don't wait until after the wedding for them to discover it from somebody else because sometimes the biggest problem is not simply you have children.
It is why did you hide them from me?

If you accidentally hit someone with your car and the person dies, DON'T STOP AT THE SCENE
Before you come for me, let me explain. Recently, a friend of mine was involved in a terrible accident. He mistakenly hit a young man who sadly died at the scene.

But the young man's death was not the only danger. My friend was almost killed by the crowd. And this is something people don't talk about enough.

When an accident happens and someone dies, emotions can immediately become uncontrollable. Before the police arrive, an angry crowd can attack the driver, beat him, burn the vehicle or even kill him.

So what should you do?
If you have just been involved in a serious accident and the situation at the scene is becoming hostile, do not stand there waiting for the crowd to decide your fate.

Get yourself to a safe place or the nearest police station and immediately report what happened.
Tell the police exactly where the accident occurred and what happened. Make sure the incident is officially reported.

If you can safely call the police from the scene without putting yourself in danger, do so. And please, do not use the situation as an excuse to disappear, hide the vehicle or evade the authorities.

There is a huge difference between escaping an angry mob and escaping justice. If the death was accidental, the proper authorities need to investigate what happened and determine whether any offence was committed.

You cannot defend yourself in court if an angry crowd has already killed you at the scene. Your life matters too.

So if you are involved in a fatal accident:
📌 Protect yourself from immediate danger.
📌 Contact the police as soon as possible.
📌 Report the accident immediately.
📌 Preserve your documents and any evidence relating to the accident.
📌 Get a lawyer before making detailed statements if the circumstances are serious.

And don't allow anyone to convince you that staying at the scene while a mob beats you is the only way to prove that you didn't intentionally cause the accident.

Dear Facebook for Creators , Facebook , Meta please, I need you to explain something to me.
I put in the work on this platform.
You tell me to post more photos, so I do it. You encourage me to post about 30 photo posts in a week, and I follow the recommendation.

But then I look at my insights and notice something very frustrating: Out of all those posts, it seems like only one type of content is getting any meaningful reach my Inbox/legal advice posts

The other posts sometimes get 2, 3, 10 or a few hundred views, despite the fact that I have over 100,000 followers. How is that possible?

Then Facebook tells me to create 35 reels. Okay, I sit down, create the reels, edit them, put in my time and effort and some of them don't even reach 500 people anymore.

So honestly, I have to ask:
What exactly is happening to my page? Is my content being restricted? Is there something wrong with my account?Am I being punished for something I don't know about? Or is the system simply no longer showing my content to the people who actually follow me?

I'm not asking Facebook to make every post viral. I'm asking for a fair opportunity for the content I work hard to create to actually reach people. I have stayed consistent. I have followed your recommendations. I have experimented with different formats

And honestly, another thing is becoming increasingly frustrating: it feels like creators using AI generated content are getting more opportunities and visibility, while creators putting time into their own original content are struggling to get even 500 views.

Not everyone wants to turn their entire page into AI content. Some of us want to create with our own faces, our own voices, our own experiences and our own creativity.

Please don't frustrate original creators into believing that the only way to survive on this platform is to start producing AI content.
If there is something wrong with my page, tell me, if I'm doing something wrong, show me but t please don't keep telling creators to post more and more while giving that content less and less opportunity to be seen.

I love creating, I want to keep creating. I just want the system to be fair.
