💡 Joint Bank Account = Automatic Inheritance by the surviving Joint Account Holder? Think Again.
A client recently told me something very common:
“I share a joint bank account with my sister. If anything happens to me, the money will go to her automatically… right?”
Not necessarily.
This is a very common misunderstanding.
In Malaysia, money in a joint bank account does not always go to the surviving account holder automatically. The funds may still form part of your estate and be distributed to the others in accordance to the Distribution Act who may not your designated beneficiary.
🏠 The same misunderstanding applies to property too
(what many call “kongsi geran” with siblings or family members).
Sharing a property name does not automatically mean the surviving owner will inherit everything. Your properties are still at risk to be inherited by the others family members that are not the surviving owner.
⚖️ Why this matters:
Without proper planning, your loved ones may face:
- disputes among family members
- delays in accessing funds or dealing with property
- legal complications during probate/administration
📝 The safest approach?
Don’t rely on assumptions.
