Trust is Built One Stone at a Time.

One of the greatest privileges of legal practice is not winning cases.

It is having the opportunity to help train the next generation of lawyers.

Today, I shared something with my chambering student that made me reflect on my own journey.

Years ago, I was told that I might not turn out to be a good lawyer. In fact, I was not confirmed in one of my previous law firm that I worked with.

I still remember a senior lawyer telling me that the direction I was taking would not lead to me becoming the lawyer I hoped to be.

Those words stung.

For a while, I questioned myself.

Looking back today, I can also understand their perspective.

The lawyers in the firm suddenly had to shoulder a tremendous amount of work after I resigned. Looking back, I can understand why my senior saw a young lawyer who still had much to learn and who was still lacking.

Time has a way of changing perspectives.

What could have become resentment became another lesson.

Not every criticism is accurate.

But almost every criticism contains something we can learn from.

Today, I have the privilege of mentoring a young lawyer of my own.

The irony is not lost on me.

His generation faces challenges mine never did.

They are not only learning to practise law.

They are learning to practise law in an age where AI is reshaping our profession almost every week.

Their journey may be different from mine, but one principle remains unchanged.

Today, I told him something I hope he remembers long after he forgets the files we worked on together.

"Trust is built like a dam; one stone at a time".

Clients do not trust us because of one brilliant submission.

They do not trust us because of one meticulously drafted agreement.

Judges do not trust us because of one impressive hearing or one successful trial.

Colleagues do not trust us because of one successful case.

Trust is built quietly.

One promise kept.

One difficult conversation handled honestly.

One deadline honoured.

One mistake acknowledged.

One client reassured.

One day at a time.

One stone at a time.

Eventually, those small acts become something far greater than competence.

They become reputation.

Trust is rarely built in dramatic moments.

It is built in ordinary ones.

Stone after stone.

Conversation after conversation.

Decision after decision.

Until one day, people no longer remember the individual stones.

They simply know that when the waters rise...

They can count on you.

Perhaps that is the kind of lawyer and the kind of person we should all aspire to become.

You Can Start Again.

If you are discouraged because you feel you're starting late, I want to share something from my own journey.

I got called to the Malaysian Bar at 30.

I had planned to become a conveyancing lawyer.

It didn't work out.

I eventually went into litigation.

At 31, I set up my own law firm.

I thought I was ready.

I wasn't. 😂

But I told myself I was ready, stepped forward anyway, and somehow, in the process of facing one problem after another, I became ready.

And here's the part people don't always see.

My failures didn't start at 30.

From around 21 to 27, I went through years where things simply didn't work out the way I had hoped.

I failed.

I stopped.

I started again.

I failed again.

I stopped.

And I started again.

At the time, those years felt like losses.

Today, I see them differently.

Every failure taught me something.

Every setback forced me to adapt.

Every difficult season added another layer to my foundation.

The resilience I have today was built from experiences I once wished I didn't have to go through.

And I'm only now, at 40, beginning to feel that I have truly stabilised.

So if you're 25, 30, 35, 40, 50 or even older and wondering whether you've fallen behind, I hope you remember this:

You are not late.

You may simply be building a foundation that takes longer to see.

You can start again.

You can reframe the losses.

You can turn failures into experience, experience into resilience, and resilience into wisdom.

You don't have to have everything figured out before you begin.

Sometimes you begin...

and figure it out along the way.

And if you're wondering whether it's too late for you:

It's not over yet.

Neither is it for me.

I'm not finished.

I'm just getting started. 🙂

"The law is a jealous mistress."

We've all heard that saying.

Someone added, "...and a lousy lover." 😄

It made me laugh, but it also made me think.

As a child, I learned table tennis, badminton and tennis.

Today, I play pickleball.

Different game. Same fundamentals.

Life is like that.

The skills we learn rarely go to waste.

Even if one day I stop practising law, I won't leave the law behind.

Perhaps I'll teach law.

Perhaps I'll become a mediator or arbitrator.

Perhaps I'll write legal books.

Perhaps I'll help lawyers grow their firms through marketing.

Perhaps I'll build legal technology.

Or perhaps... I'll do all of the above.

The law has taught me how to think, communicate, negotiate and solve problems.

Those skills go far beyond the courtroom.

No knowledge is ever wasted.

Every lesson you learn today may become the foundation for something you haven't imagined yet.

🥋 Lessons from the Jianghu

In wuxia stories, Jianghu is the world where martial artists, wanderers, and masters live, learn, and earn their reputation.

One lesson has always stayed with me.

When someone enters the Jianghu, people don't just ask how skilled you are.

They ask:

• Who is your master?
• Which school or sect trained you?
• Who do you walk the journey with?

Why?

Because your teachers, your environment, and your companions shape who you become.

That made me reflect on my own legal journey.

I began in conveyancing/contracts.

Later, I moved into civil and criminal litigation.

People sometimes ask me why I have confidence in making that transition.

The answer is simple.

Because I've seen someone walk this path before me.

One of my mentors started in conveyancing and contract drafting before becoming an outstanding litigator. Today, he continues to guide me, even in Court of Appeal and Federal Court matters.

His journey reminds me that what I'm attempting is possible.

I don't need to reinvent the path.

I simply need to learn from those who have walked it well.

In every profession, find a mentor whose journey resembles the one you hope to take.

Learn wholeheartedly.

Stay humble.

One day, it will be your turn to guide someone else.
