With the world being struck by a pandemic, we are heavily dependant on our phones to receive and communicate news with our peers. Whatsapp and social media has easily become one of the major platforms where we share current news and updates.
Unfortunately, the risk of sharing fake news have also increased and we can all be responsible for wrongly sharing fake news or be victim of receiving one.
How do we ensure that we do not share fake news to our loved ones? The following are ways in how you can verify authenticity of a piece of news;
1. Ensure the website is legitimate – Look at the URL and extensions such as “.com”, “.uk’,“.my” are commonly legitimate.
2. Cross check with major news websites to see if the information is making headlines.
3. Cross check with the following websites
• Snopes.com
• Sebenarnya.my
• Factcheck.afp.com
Please be mindful that it is illegal to spread false information on social media and one can be charged under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or network service.
The punishment under this act is a fine not exceeding fifty thousand ringgit or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or to both and shall also be liable to a further fine of one thousand ringgit for every day during which the offence is continued after conviction.
