The First Woman to Practise Law in India. Cornelia Sorabji. She started practising law after her return to India from Oxford in 1894, where she had sat for the Civil Law exam of the university. She was the first woman to sit for this exam. She became a reader to the Codrington Library of All Souls College, Oxford in 1890. At this time women in Britain did not have the right to vote. They also did not have the right to obtain a degree.
Cornelia already had a first class degree of the Bombay University from 1888. She had taken her education at the Deccan College, Pune. She did her LLB from Bombay University in 1897 and cleared the Pleader's Exam of the Allahabad High Court two years later in 1899. Her practise mostly consisted of being the legal advocate for women.
