KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — Authorities strongly believed Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) witness Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh, who was abducted last month, is still in the country and alive.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said official immigration records showed that Ling last departed Malaysia for Singapore in January.

“As of now, there is no departure movement based on official channels. We believe she is still in the country based on immigration records.

“I am also confident she is still alive for the time being,” he told reporters during a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Contingent Headquarters here.

Rusdi also said closed-circuit television footage (CCTV) obtained by investigators also revealed there were in fact five vehicles involved in Ling’s abduction, not three initially.

He also confirmed three of the vehicles involved during the interception were using cloned numbers plates.

“We have spoken to the original vehicle owners and they have confirmed that they were in possession of their vehicles at the time of the incident,”

KUALA LUMPUR - Although the overnight policy rate (OPR) is expected by many to stay at 3.0 per cent, some economists see a possible 25 basis points (bps) cut by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) as pre-emptive support against the potential downside risks of the American tariffs.

They believe that business sentiment has turned bearish despite Washington’s 90-day pause on the 24 per cent import levy on Malaysia, with industries operated by both big and small companies being affected.

Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the expectation of the rate cut is also mainly due to concerns over global growth.

After US President Donald Trump announced a series of reciprocal tariffs affecting countries across the board on April 2, 2025, concerns over Malaysia’s economic outlook and trade and investment prospects have expanded.

The latest is that Malaysia will begin negotiating with the US next week with the hope of ensuring no tariffs are imposed, especially in key sectors.

With downside revisions to growth this year from the earlier forecast of 4.5 per cent-5.5 per cent, expectations, therefore, are generally mixed ahead of Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decision scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday). 8/5/2025.

MACC arrests two Home Ministry officials, civilian over alleged corruption in fast-tracking citizenship

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday arrested two Home Ministry officials and a member of the public in relation to an investigation on alleged corruption to expedite citizenship-related processes.

In a brief statement today, the MACC said the trio were arrested in an operation between 1pm and 5pm yesterday in Putrajaya to aid in investigations.

The MACC added that the arrests were made following information received regarding a corruption case related to the speeding up of applications to confirm citizenship status.

In Malaysia, what is sometimes referred to as citizenship applications are actually applications made by individuals to confirm that their citizenship status should be Malaysian under the Federal Constitution, which will then pave the way for them to be recognised as citizens.

“This operation follows the Ops Outlander recently carried out by the MACC. The Home Ministry gave full cooperation to MACC in the investigation of this case,” the MACC said.

MACC said the trio’s statements are currently being recorded at the MACC’s Putrajaya headquarters.

In March, the MACC arrested 16 individuals under two operations known as Ops Outlander and Ops Birth, including a medical practitioner with the title “Datuk Seri”, a civil servant, a legal practitioner, agents, and those who applied for the birth registration
