A Warm Welcome from Kuala Lumpur to Shenzhen

Today, I had the pleasure of hosting Ms. Hedi from Guangdong Liangma Law Firm, Shenzhen. What started as a simple meet-and-greet turned into a lively exchange of legal insights, business stories, and even a few laughs over the quirks of our respective systems.

The discussion gave us a deeper appreciation of China’s legal structure especially in vibrant, fast paced Shenzhen and how it shapes cross-border business. We explored ways our firms could collaborate, not just in transactional work, but also in helping clients navigate the unique nuances between Malaysian and Chinese law.

Beyond the legal talk, there was something energising about the cultural exchange, sharing how our cities work, how our clients think, and even how our coffee breaks look (Shenzhen might have speed, but KL still wins on leisurely coffee time!).

This visit is more than the start of a collaboration. It’s a bridge between two legal worlds. We’re excited for what lies ahead and grateful for the friendships formed along the way.

I am indeed grateful that we are able to build stronger connections, expanding horizons, and proving that while laws may differ, the spirit of collaboration is universal.

2 Days at the ASEAN Business Summit – My Takeaways

Just wrapped up two days at the ASEAN Summit, and I’m walking away feeling both inspired and energised.

The big themes? Unity in ASEAN and the growing importance of ESG. Speaker after speaker reminded us that ASEAN’s real strength lies in working together, not just across borders, but across industries and communities. And when it comes to ESG, the message was loud and clear: it’s no longer a “good to have”, it’s a must-have for a sustainable future.

From my lens as a lawyer, I couldn’t help but think about how the legal world fits into all this. Laws and agreements aren’t just paperwork, they’re the frameworks that turn big ideas into action, keep things transparent, and make sure commitments actually stick. Whether it’s cross-border cooperation or ESG compliance, the legal field has a quiet but powerful role in making unity and sustainability happen.

It was two days of great conversations, valuable connections, and plenty of food for thought. Now the real work begins, turning all that inspiration into something tangible.

Strengthening ASEAN Legal Cooperation – Cross-Border Insolvency in Focus

This August, ASEAN Law Forum 2025 in Kuala Lumpur will put cross-border insolvency front and centre, a timely discussion as Malaysia passes the Cross-Border Insolvency Bill 2025, aligning with the UNCITRAL Model Law to enhance recognition of foreign insolvency proceedings.

On my recent trade mission to Cambodia, my firm signed an MOU with Sarana Law Firm in Phnom Penh. This partnership strengthens legal collaboration between Malaysia and Cambodia in insolvency, restructuring, and corporate advisory, precisely the kind of proactive cooperation ASEAN needs.

The timing could not be better. With businesses and investments flowing freely across our region, harmonised legal frameworks are essential for protecting stakeholders, building investor confidence, and ensuring efficient resolution of cross-border cases.

The Forum will be a catalyst but real progress comes when we match dialogue with action. Proud that our Malaysia–Cambodia partnership is already taking that step.

Strengthening Ties Amid Regional Challenges: My Trade Mission to Cambodia

I recently had the privilege to be part of a trade mission to Cambodia, where I met with Prime Minister Hun Manet and four other key ministers from various departments. Our mission was clear, to explore opportunities and enhance bilateral relations between Malaysia and Cambodia in trade, investment, and economic cooperation.

While the trip was productive and full of optimism, it was also impossible to ignore the ongoing border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. The recent clashes, which claimed lives and displaced thousands of innocent civilians, were a sobering reminder that conflict benefits no one.

I am heartened that Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, played a vital mediating role during urgent peace talks in Putrajaya on 28 July 2025, which successfully secured an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

Looking ahead, Kuala Lumpur will host the General Border Committee meeting from 4–7 August 2025 to further address these tensions. I sincerely hope these discussions will bring meaningful outcomes and lasting peace between the two nations.

War yields no winners — only loss, pain, and missed opportunities for shared prosperity. It is my wish to see this conflict end, paving the way for stability, cooperation, and mutual growth in our region.
