There is something strangely democratic about a karaoke room.
That hotshot lawyer who cross-examines witnesses for a living suddenly forgets the second verse. That shy admin exec who speaks in whispers somehow knows every word to a K-pop song released 10 years ago. Someone insists they're "just here to support" before quietly grabbing the microphone five minutes later, to never let it go. Someone else who’s always prim and proper in office starts belting out Linkin Park’s Bleed It Out and headbangs like he was born in a mosh pit.
And for a brief moment, job titles, seniority and seating arrangements ceases to matter. Everyone was simply trying (with varying degrees of success) to stay on key, in tempo, while laughing with (and at) one another.
Which, now that we think about it, isn't all that different from building a law firm.
15 years ago, we set out with little more than a belief that there had to be a way to practise law that made room for thinking, laughter and people, alongside deadlines, disputes and the occasional existential crisis. We certainly didn't have all the answers. Truth be told, we're still looking for most of them.
What we did find over the years, however, were people.
They brought with them different personalities, different ideas and different ways of seeing the world. They challenged us when we were wrong, celebrated with us when we were right, and reminded us that no matter how serious our work may be, we should never take ourselves too seriously.
That’s probably why yesterday felt so fitting.
For one evening, court robes gave way to microphones. People who spend their days carefully choosing the right words suddenly forgot lyrics. Those who claimed they “don’t really sing” somehow ended up requesting another song, 16 more times. Lawyers discovered that convincing a judge is, in fact, much easier than convincing everyone they can hit the high notes.
Some performances were genuinely impressive. Others will remain protected by karaoke privilege. And that’s perfectly alright. Because, much like the last 15 years, it was never really about perfection.
It was simply about showing up (whether on time or not, for some, is a different subject though). It’s about cheering one another on, laughing at ourselves and creating memories that won’t appear in any law report, but somehow become the stories we remember most.
Looking back, perhaps that’s what these 15 years have really been about.
To everyone who has been part of our story over the past 15 years; past and present, clients and friends, lawyers, staff and interns, a sincere thank you. Every conversation, every lesson, every late night, every toilet break, every breakdown, every meal shared, every laugh and every chapter has left its mark on who we are.
We have absolutely no idea what the next 15 years will look like (history suggests we never do) but if they come with the same people, the same curiosity, and perhaps slightly better singing, we'd say we're on the right track.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we're off to rest our voices. But not for long, as the playlist, thankfully, isn’t over yet.
