The Secretary of Economy of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, has acknowledged that there are no guarantees that former President Donald Trump will not impose tariffs on Mexico in the future. This stance reflects the uncertainty in the trade relationship between both countries. Recently, the Mexican government, under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, secured a 30-day extension on the implementation of a 25% tariff proposed by Trump on Mexican exports. This achievement is attributed to Sheinbaum's direct intervention, as she negotiated the tariff delay in a phone call with Trump.
In response to the tariff threat, Ebrard has emphasized the need to redefine the economic relationship with the United States and relaunch the "Made in Mexico" program to strengthen national production and reduce dependency on exports. Additionally, Ebrard has pointed out that the imposition of a 25% tariff by Trump would be a "strategic mistake" that could harm millions of American families, as it would increase the cost of products imported from Mexico. In summary, although diplomatic efforts have managed to delay the imposition of tariffs, uncertainty remains regarding Trump's future actions. The Mexican government, with the support of business leaders, is taking proactive measures to strengthen the national economy and prepare for potential challenges in the trade relationship with the United States.
