Malta-founded language school EC English has halted new student arrivals across its schools worldwide, with hundreds of students expected to be affected in Malta alone.
In a letter sent to booking agents, EC said that due to “unforeseen operational circumstances”, it would be unable to accept students who were due to arrive at its schools this weekend, 12th and 13th September.
Students have been advised not to travel on the basis of their existing bookings, with EC warning that it will not be able to provide their planned courses or accommodation.
“We appreciate that this is extremely short notice,” the company told agents, apologising for the disruption and uncertainty facing students and families, particularly those who have already booked flights and made other travel arrangements.
The situation extends far beyond Malta. Founded on the island in 1991, EC English operates internationally, with schools across the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. According to the company’s website, it normally welcomes around 40,000 students from more than 140 countries each year.
The development follows the previously announced closure of EC campuses in Bristol and Montreal. Those closures were described at the time as part of a strategic review of the company’s global operations.
EC told agents that it would provide another update once its position had been confirmed.
For now, the full extent of the situation and what it could mean for EC English’s future operations remains unclear.
