But few know that this day was actually chosen through a law, The Malta Independence Order 1964, published in edition number 11,688 of the Malta Government Gazzette. It establised the Maltese Constitution and stated, inter alia, that, "The appointed day for the purposes of section 1(1) of the Malta Independence Act 1964 shall be 21st September 1964."
