China HAGUE SYSTEM

WIPO announces that China has joined the Hague System for Design applications which is considered as a major development in the Intellectual Property . China will be the 77th member of the Hague Union and this will enable non-Chinese residents or business to secure their industrial design protection in China , a market which is very important in the world economy. In parallel Chinese companies will now be allowed to register their respective designs in more that 94 countries that are member of the Hague system.

UAE – New Trademark Law

The United Arab Emirates will be introducing starting from January 2, 2022, major reforms on the trademark law which will certainly have a robust impact on attracting investments to the country. Among the major reforms introduced: the Multi class registration replacing the monoclass system, the revision of timeframe for examination will be 90 days instead of 30 days and the expansion of the definition of a trademark to cover non-traditional marks such as; holograms, sound and smell but also the possibility to register Geographical Indications. Under the new law, all objections to decisions by the trademark Office in regards to application and oppositions can be submitted to a Committee that will be headed by a Judge and experts appointed by the MOE, even more the cancellation of trademark will be from that time raised before the Trademark Office versus the old law where it was only possible through Court. Several other measures will be taking place including Customs regulations and stricter penalties and sanctions to combat counterfeit. Bahrain value-added tax increase

The Council of Ministers in Bahrain has approved an increase of VAT from 5% to 10%. The Article 4 of VAT Law 33 of year 2021 stipulates that the same will be implemented starting from 1st January 2022.
