The UN General Assembly has renewed global commitment to the .
The High-level Meeting on the Midterm review of the New Urban Agenda sent a clear message that the framework is in place—now we must accelerate implementation. The General Assembly adopted, with 148 votes, a Political Declaration recommitting countries to the 2016 New Urban Agenda, warning that rapid urbanization is outpacing progress as more than 3 billion people still lack safe, adequate and affordable housing, over 330 million are homeless and more than 1 billion live in informal settlements and slums.
The Political Declaration calls for:
🏘️ Prioritizing adequate housing for all
🌍 Building inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities
🤝 Empowering local and regional governments through multilevel governance
💰 Scaling up finance and investment for sustainable urbanization
📊 Strengthening data, innovation and partnerships to deliver results
UN leaders warned cities will determine whether the world meets the Sustainable Development Goals as urban populations rise from 58 per cent today to an expected 70 per cent by 2050. A high-level mid-term review found that progress requires a shift to more financing, stronger local governments and climate-resilient urban planning.
The next decade to 2036 must be defined not by new commitments, but by implementation that improves people's lives.
